Reduced Course Load (RCL) Info
Overview
International students are required to enroll in at least 12 credits per quarter to maintain their immigration status. There are some exceptions to this rule.
If you are:
- Having academic difficulties with the English Language and/or reading requirements
- Having academic difficulties due to an unfamiliarity with American teaching methods
- Having academic difficulties due to improper course level placement
- Graduating and are enrolled in all the classes you need
- Have medical documentation indicating a medical reason that you cannot study full-time
- Or, will be enrolling concurrently in another SEVIS approved institution to meet your enrollment requirement
Please complete this form BEFORE you drop any classes.
If you are applying for your graduation quarter, your form I-20 end date will be shortened to reflect that you will be graduating and completing your program.
If you are requesting Reduced Course Load authorization for a medical reason, you will need a note from your doctor.
Do not drop below full-time until you have received approval for the Reduced Course Load (RCL) from IEC. A new I-20 with information about the RCL authorization will be issued once approved.
To Do Checklist:
- Discuss with your academic advisor or doctor if your situation fits the criteria outlined above for a Reduced Course Load authorization.
- Complete and submit the Reduced Course Load form. (If requesting a Reduced Course Load for a medical reason, obtain a note from your doctor)
- Once approved, obtain the RCL I-20 from the International Education Center.
- Contact Records and Registration to withdraw from course(s).
