"ilia's Lament"

by Mackenzie King

This poem, which is a poetic version of my unpublished novel, addresses readers who’ve experienced the pain of broken relationships, while also cautioning them to be wary of whom they give their hearts to. As the young Fay reflects on the consequences of her actions, life acts as a reminder to all, that we must be careful of the choices we make or else be forced to pay the price.

ilia’s Lament

(The Fall of the Fay)

With joy I lived each purest day,
Spent among the Imps and Fay;
But little did my young heart know
I'd fall for someone from below.

Tempts me with His charm so fair.
Ne'er I saw the evil there.
Beauty in his dazzling grin.
Deceived, I gave my heart to him.

Now I lie with broken wings,
Wrists are bound, my wounds still sting.
Each day I wake to his cruel sneer.
Why dost his evil haunt me here?

My heart lies broken in my hands.
My days sift past like grains of sand.
Now with pain I live my life,
Shedding tears, the demon's wife...
