Faculty Spotlight - Heidi Weiss-Green

What do you teach at EvCC?

Math classes ranging from pre-algebra through calculus and above.

Tell us a little about your professional background.

I have Bachelor's and Master's degrees of Science in Mathematics; I got them both from Western Washington University. My first job out of college was working as an analyst, until I found a job teaching math at Olympic College. My next professional move was teaching math at Everett Community College.

Why did you choose EvCC?

EvCC was close to home, and they let me teach evening classes as a full time tenured-track math faculty, allowing me to be home during the day with my small children. I fell in love with the kind and inclusive environment at EvCC, and it feels like home now. I’ve been teaching at EvCC for 28 years, and I still love it!

How has the pandemic affected you? How are you doing?

I enjoy being home; it’s been relaxing. It’s nice to spend more time with my family and my animals. Everything has slowed down a bit, which can make it easier to get things done around the house, although, it can be boring, too. Along with the relaxing moments, I also feel unsettled and worried. My emotions have really been up and down.

How have you adapted your curriculum and teaching methods to support students who are learning from home?

One thing is, I have Zoom office hours, which can be done together as a group or with individual appointments. Students can also call, if they prefer that. Transitioning all my classes to online has required extra responsiveness, and I find myself responding to students around-the-clock.

What advice do you have for students who are taking online or livestream classes for the first time?

Definitely reach out for help; go to office hours and online tutoring. I think some students feel nervous about reaching out, but students shouldn't feel like they're alone. There are so many people willing to help! If students can immerse themselves in school, it may give them a positive distraction to focus on rather than the stress or worries happening around us. Now can be a really good time to go to school; students can take advantage of having more time at home and can work at a more relaxed pace.

What do you like to do for fun?

I like to exercise, work in the yard, and work around my house. Lately, I’ve been helping my neighbor with their cats, which is great because I love animals! I also like to watch movies and read.

What is your favorite snack?

I like to eat small snacks throughout the day, like a handful of nuts or a bite of a protein bar. My favorite nuts are brazil, macadamia, and pistachio.

Is there anything you’d like to add?

I really wish that we can try our best and just go for it; give online classes a chance. It might be uncomfortable to try something new, but you may be surprised and actually like it. One new thing I found I like is doing Zoom office hours to meet with students. I was unsure about it at first, but now I really like it and plan to keep it.
