Professional Research and Interests

I study the diversity, ecology, and conservation of native plants of the Pacific Northwest. I also study the traditional and modern cultural uses of plants - such as food, medicine, and materials. I believe that studying traditional ecological knowledge can help us solve modern problems and create healthier, more sustainable, and more resilient societies.
