Academic Credit for Prior Learning (ACPL)
About ACPL
Everett Community College recognizes that students come to college with knowledge they have gained outside a formal classroom. ACPL is an avenue for EvCC to recognize knowledge and award college credit that students can use toward their degree or credential. There are five ways students may earn ACPL credit: Credit by Testing, Extra-Institutional Learning (Industry Credentials), Military Training, Prior Experiential Learning, and Course Challenge Exams.
To start the process, please make an account and log into Credit Predictor Pro.
If you have questions regarding ACPL, please contact the ACPL program specialist at ACPL@everettcc.edu.
If you have questions about transfer credit options, please visit the Transfer Credit Options page.
Limits to ACPL
- With the exception of AP and IB test credit, DTA students are limited to 15 credits of “B” list electives. Exceptions may be granted on a case-by-case basis.
- Students may not seek challenge exam or prior learning portfolio credit for a course in which they were previously enrolled.
- Challenge exam and prior experiential learning portfolio credit must be applicable to students' academic or professional program of study.
- Students may earn up to 15 credits of elective credit for college level learning when an equivalent course is not listed in the course catalog. Elective credit awarded in this manner must fit within the students' program of study.
- Four-year institutions may or may not accept ACPL as transfer credit. Students are responsible for consulting their advisor or other resources to ensure they understand the ACPL transfer policies for specific four-year institutions.
Credit by Testing
EvCC offers credit for the Advanced Placement (AP), College Level Exam Program (CLEP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Cambridge International (CI) Examinations. The credit offered is determined by test score. Each credit equivalency has been reviewed by faculty and abides by the Washington State Board Recommendations. For a complete listing of courses that may be completed through Credit by Testing, please see the EvCC Course Catalog.
There is no fee associated with Credit by Testing.
To earn Credit by Testing, submit your official scores to Everett Community College. Links to request official scores are as follows:
- Advanced Placement (AP)
- College Level Exam Program (CLEP)
- International Baccalaureate (IB)
- Cambridge International (CI)
A student can earn up to 2/3 of the credits required for their degree or certificate through Credit by Testing. Credit by Testing ACPL credits may be used for both required classes and electives. For university transfer degrees, receiving universities typically accept either AP or IB credit as general education requirements or transferable (“A” list) electives. Four-year universities typically do not accept CLEP or CI credit. If you intend to transfer, EvCC recommends that you contact your intended transfer institution to determine their policy. Direct all questions regarding Credit by Testing to ACPL@everettcc.edu.
Extra-Institutional Learning (Industry Credentials)
EvCC offers credit for many industry certifications in areas such as Fire Science, Criminal Justice, Information Technology, Early Childhood Education, Medical Coding, and Welding. A complete list of certificates for which EvCC offers credit is available via Credit Predictor Pro (link below). Credit equivalencies are also posted on individual department websites. The published equivalencies are not an exhaustive list. If you have a certificate or credential that does not appear on the department website or in Credit Predictor Pro, please submit your certificate. A faculty member will review it for possible credit.
There is a $33.70 transcription fee associated with Extra-Institutional Learning.
To apply for Extra-Institutional Learning credit, create a Credit Predictor Pro account. Upload your certificates and other documentation. The ACPL program specialist will review your certificates and award credit as appropriate.
For university transfer degrees, credit form Extra-Institutional Learning is limited to 15 non-transferable (“B” list) electives. For an associate in general studies, students may earn up to 45 credits through Extra-Institutional Learning. However, students should be aware that four-year institutions may not accept Extra-Institutional Learning as transfer credit. For all other degrees and certificates, up to 50% of the credits required may be completed through Extra-Institutional Learning.
Please direct all questions regarding Extra-Institutional Learning to ACPL@everettcc.edu.
Military Training
EvCC awards credit for some military training, military occupational specialties (MOS), and rates. Credit for military training is based on American Council on Education (ACE) guidance and must appear on the service member’s Joint Service Transcript (JST) or Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) transcript. EvCC can only award military credit toward courses that it offers. Some credit that appears on a JST will not have a course equivalent so EvCC will be unable to award credit.
There is no fee associated with credit for military training.
To request credit for military training, submit your official JST or CCAF transcript to EvCC using the links below.

Prior Experiential Learning Portfolio
Students may arrive at EvCC with a great deal of college-level learning without any educational documentation. The Prior Experiential Learning Portfolio gives students a chance to showcase their knowledge to earn college credit. A porfolio may include a cover letter, resume, letter(s) from employer(s), work samples, etc.
There is a $112.36 base fee + $ 28.09 per credit fee (example: 5 credits = $252.81) associated with a Prior Learning Portfolio.
Before requesting credit through a Prior Learning Portfolio, you should discuss it with your program advisor, another faculty member, or the ACPL program specialist. They can help you determine if a portfolio is the best option for you and help get you started. From there, you will build your portfolio using the guidance in the Prior Learning Portfolio Handbook (link below). When you are finished, you will fill out the Prior Learning Portfolio request form and send it, along with your portfolio, to the ACPL program specialist. The program specialist will work with appropriate faculty to evaluate your portfolio and award credit. The fee for a Prior Learning Portfolio must be paid before the portfolio is evaluated.

Course Challenge Exam
Students may have sufficient knowledge to pass a comprehensive exam demonstrating that they have the same skills and knowledge as a student who has taken a class. If students feel they possess this level of knowledge, they may elect to take a course challenge exam. Students who opt for a course challenge exam should have completed previous training, work experience, private study or other qualifications indicating that they have sufficient knowledge to pass an exam.
There is a $254.21 fee associated with course challenge exams.
To apply for a course challenge, the student must fill out the course challenge exam request form and have it signed by the instructor of the course and the appropriate dean. To receive credit in the current quarter, the student must submit the signed form before the 10th day of that quarter. Any requests for course challenge exams made after the 10th day of the quarter will be transcribed in the following quarter. The student must pay the fee before they are eligible to take the course challenge exam. The exam must be completed by the 50th day of the quarter. If the student is currently enrolled in the class they wish to challange, it is the student's responsibility to follow the College's quarterly deadlines and processes for withdrawing from classes.
Students may earn up to 50% of their degree or certificate through a course challenge exam. If a student decides to challenge a course in which they are currently enrolled, the same withdraw and refund rules apply as would to any student who elects to withdraw. Course challenge exams are subject to the following:
Not every course can be taken via challenge exam. If you wish to take a challenge exam, speak to a faculty member to determine if the course is eligible.
- Activity courses may not be challenged.
- Courses taken previously at a regionally accredited institution may not be challenged.
- Courses previously audited at EvCC may not be challenged.
- An individual course may be challenged only once.
