Student Spotlight - Anthony J. Ansay

EvCC Graduate Anthony AnsayWhy did you choose EvCC?
First of all, I chose EvCC because of its proximity to where I live. I also chose EvCC because I wanted to be a part of a smaller community of students because of the fact that I just migrated to this country before coming to the school two years ago. My thought process back then was that going to a smaller school would help me adapt to the new environment I am in, which actually did. Finally, I chose EvCC because taking your first two years in college is more affordable if you take it in a community college compared to a four year university. All of that said, I am glad to say that all of the reasons I have mentioned are encompassed in our school motto "Stay close, Go Far."

What did you study at EvCC?
I completed my Business DTA

Who helped you succeed at EvCC? (faculty member, staff). What did that person do to help you?
A few of the people who helped me through my two years in EvCC are Christine Sullivan, who helped me navigate through the life of a college student, my wonderful advisors from Student LIFE, whom I've had the pleasure of working with and who have taught me a lot of lessons I will be able to take with me on my future endeavors, and finally Bernita Bontrager, who has and is currently helping me with my transition to a four year university. Without all of them I wouldn't be able to navigate through my new environment and the educational system of the US.

What advice do you have for new EvCC students?
If there is something I would advise new EvCC students on, it would be for them to get involved with more on-campus activities because there are many programs made just for students as well as opportunities for them to grow and be a part of something bigger. A good example of a good place to be involved in is the office of Student LIFE because it is a place where different people from different walks in life come together to achieve a common goal, which is to promote leadership, inclusion, fun and engagement on campus; hence the acronym LIFE in Student LIFE.

What do you plan to do next? (Job, transfer, etc.)
After graduating with my AA, I got a job at Nike where I plan to work over the summer. In the fall, I plan to move to Bellingham and attend Western Washington University to complete my degree in business.

Describe the best experience you had at EvCC.
The best experience I’ve had at EvCC is getting involved in Student LIFE because before I got involved I thought that there was nothing more than taking classes at EvCC. It was when I took a chance and submitted a student leader job application and got involved that I was able to meet new people, grow as a person, be presented with an array of opportunities and be a part of something bigger.

Anything else you want to add?

At first I didn't know what EvCC had in store for me and I am very happy that I chose EvCC because without the help of this institution and the people I had the chance to meet and interact with, I wouldn't be the person I am today. Let’s go Trojans!
