Student Spotlight - Geoffrey Lewis

Geoffrey Lewis

What did you study at EvCC?
I completed the Medical Billing and Coding certification programs and acquired an associate degree - DTA (Direct Transfer Agreement).

Why did you choose EvCC?
It was close to home and I actually knew a few of the vets already attending there.

What branch of the military did you serve in and when did you serve?
U.S. Navy for six years (2004-2010)

What kind of support did you find for veterans at EvCC?
Geoffrey LewisThe people in the Veterans' Resource Center were nothing short of the best guidance for someone like me. They pointed me in the right direction and walked me through countless forms and whatnot we had to go through to receive our benefits, of which I would not have known otherwise. They reminded me of my days back in the fleet when one person would have a problem or a question and there was always a person or two who could provide some sort of advice.

Who helped you succeed at EvCC? (faculty member, staff). What did that person do to help you?
Arlene Cahoon and Seth Peterson (from the Veterans' Resource Center) are a dream team. They knew exactly what I needed to do, when and how I needed to do it, in order to get the best possible outcome from both my classes as well as my benefits.

What advice do you have for new EvCC veteran students?
Don’t be afraid to look to others for clarity and guidance, it’s gotten me out of a lot of sticky situations and helped me understand why things were happening the way they were.

What do you plan to do next? (Job, transfer, etc.)
I am currently attending WSU through the University Center here on campus.

Describe the best experience you had at EvCC.
There have been far too many to name just label a single one as “the best.”

Anything else you want to add?
Things might get difficult, but if you hold fast and remember you’re not alone, you’ll go so far in class and in life.
