Student Spotlight Katherinne Echeverri

Tell me a little bit about yourself (name, where you’re from, what brought you to the U.S.)

My name is Katherinne Echeverri, I came to the US in 2016 to help my aunt who was going through cancer treatment. After helping her for a while my family offered me help with my education and that's why I decided to stay to study.

Why did you choose EvCC?

I chose EvCC due to its openness to International Students, its great reviews and because of how close it is to the place I live.

What are you studying at EvCC?

I am currently pursuing an Associates Degree in Foreign Languages and a Certificate in Spanish Medical Interpreting. I will obtain both at the end of this Spring when I graduate.

What have been the biggest challenges you’ve faced as an International student?

One of the biggest challenges I had to face as an International Student was trying to meet new people and make friends. When you come from another country it is very easy to feel strange and lost, especially if you are going to college. There is also a slight age gap between most other students and me, which didn’t make things any easier.

How have you overcome these challenges? Who has helped you?

To be able to overcome these challenges, I had to believe very hard in myself and be sure everything was going to be alright. I focused more on studying and achieving goals. Also, getting more involved in learning to play hockey helped me have more confidence in myself and to meet other people.

What do you plan to do next? (Job, transfer, etc.)

Once I graduate this Spring, my goal is to practice what I’ve learned and find a job probably as a medical interpreter.

What do you like to do in your free time?

During my free time I enjoy reading, cooking and playing and watching hockey.

What have you learned about yourself by being a student ambassador?

I have learned that we have more potential than we believe. That little challenges are good for you, and that working in a team is the easiest way to achieve things.

Who has helped you succeed at EvCC?

During my time at EvCC I have had really good instructors, they have helped me succeed both academically and personally.

Describe the best experience you had at EvCC?

The best experience for me was when I became a Student Ambassador. The last few months have been a great experience where I have had the opportunity of having fun, making friends, getting involved with campus activities and meeting many people with whom I have established good connections.

What advice do you have for new students, particularly those coming from other countries?

That there's no need to be scared or worried through the time you’re here. You will find many people who will care for you and will help you with all your needs. Also, it is very important to keep believing in yourself because when we really want to we are capable of achieving amazing things.
