Student Spotlight - Kweli Vuur

EvCC Grad Venise Williams with her son Isaiah

Why did you choose EvCC?

I chose EvCC based on location and the programs offered.

What did you study at EvCC?

My program of study was medical coding. I am currently enrolled in a 4-year transfer degree program.

What advice would you give to new EvCC students?

I would suggest that students get to know every department on campus in order to connect with people and find out what resources the college has to offer. It was because I surrounded myself with people who wanted me to succeed that I was able to graduate with honors. You do go far when you stay close, lol!

What advice do you have for students who are learning online at home?

I suggest students be sure to get a reliable computer with a strong internet connection to compete with everyone being at home and online. A reliable computer should be the focus. They should pair with a friend if they do not have a computer or use their phone. Overall, no excuses! I learned not to make any excuses and to do what it takes to graduate.

Describe the best experience you had at EvCC

My best experience was getting involved with student clubs like The Black Student Union and the Diversity & Equity Center in general. This is when I found peer support and now I feel like I have gained friends and I am a part of something that positively impacts the community.

Anything else you want to add?

The staff there are the best, they even took time out of their busy schedule to offer words if wisdom to my son, my brother and myself. They were my family away from home. I'd like to take this opportunity to list a noticeable special thanks to ALL of the following EVCC staff. They all played a major role in my success:

  • Bilal Abdullah
  • Angelic Sedivec
  • Dorrin Wanjiru
  • Christopher Wells
  • Jerod Grant
  • Michael Fintress
  • Avianca Walker

Update: March 2020

I ultimately graduated with an associates degree in business administration in June 2018. I am an entrepreneur with my own speaking business as a professional poet at Deep Poetic Soul. I published my first book in Spring 2020, and I have products that will soon be available in stores. Thanks to all the amazing leadership at EvCC, I have evolved into a professional who takes ownership of my business endeavors!
