Student Spotlight - Bailey Behn

EvCC Electrical Engineering student Bailey Behn receives diploma at commencement ceremony

Inspired by Tony Stark (aka Iron Man), Bailey Behn chose EvCC to pursue a career in electrical engineering. “When I was little,” says Behn, “I watched Iron Man and thought things like what if that was real? How would that work? And why would it work?" An EvCC Foundation Scholarship recipient, Behn chose EvCC because it was close to home and made more sense financially. “I've always been nervous about the topic of money,” he says. “Knowing I secured the EvCC Foundation Scholarship helped ease that worry and got me to where I could walk across the stage and graduate.”

Tell me a little bit about yourself, including the degree or certificate you earned from EvCC.

My name is Bailey Behn. I am an Electrical Engineering student and just received my Associate's of Science in Electrical Engineering. I chose to follow this path of education because when I was little, I watched Iron Man and thought things like: "What if that was real?", "How would that work?" and "Why would it work?". Of course, it's science fiction and movie magic, but the inspiration stuck.

It was closer to home and a financially smarter decision for me.

What do you plan to do next?

Transfer to WSU Everett to continue my education and earn my Bachelor's Degree.

What interested you about your area of study?

Robotics, for the most part. Also, the concept of magnetism and its physics piqued my interest. The first question also has a bit of my reasoning.

How do you think the skills you learned at EvCC are helping you reach your goals?

I learned the basics of what I will need to know to be an engineer. From here on out, it will be repetition.

Describe the best experience you had at EvCC.

Star Wars movie day in STEM Club (pre-COVID, of course). I made many new friends and had a lot of fun (We had a group of Stormtroopers come in full costume, it was awesome!).

Who has helped you succeed at EvCC? What did that person do to help you?

Kristine Washburn. She helped me organize my degree plan and get me started. She ended up being one of my last teachers at EvCC and made the class so much fun. I felt I could be me and have fun (which is not an easy thing to do in a Physics 3 class).

How has your EvCC Foundation Scholarship helped you?

I've always been nervous about the topic of money. Knowing I secured the EvCC Foundation Scholarship helped ease that worry and got me to where I could walk across the stage and graduate.

What advice do you have for new students?

Make friends and communicate with them. While I made many new friends, I didn't do much on the communication part, which would have helped in terms of studying and overall morale.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

To all you new or current students, enjoy your time at EvCC and make the most of what the campus gives you. There are a lot of things I didn't do on campus and a lot of missed opportunities.
