Student Spotlight - Claudia Umana

What did you study at EvCC?

Associate in Arts & Sciences - Direct Transfer (DTA) for nutrition.

Why did you choose EvCC?

I chose EvCC because the moment I walked in, the staff was very welcoming and guided me through my college career.

Who helped you succeed at EvCC? What did that person do to help you?

I cannot thank (Faculty Advisor for TRiO Student Support Services) Linda Summers enough for all her support! She always believed in me! She is a "do-it-now" person! And I love that about her. Her consistency in every situation amazed me! And it really pushed me to never give up! Forever grateful!

What do you plan to do next?

I will be transferring to Bastyr University for my bachelor's of science degree in nutrition.

Describe the best experience you had at EvCC.

My best experience at EvCC was getting involved with the MEChA program (a student-led organization for Chicanx students). I met amazing people and also helped guide students through college! There should never be any excuse not to succeed, and this program helped me encourage other students to have hope and that no matter what situation you are in, being whatever you want shouldn't be questioned.

How did the TRiO program help you?

TRiO (a federally funded program that provides academic support to first-generation, low-income students and students with disabilities) was the best thing that ever happened to me! If I was ever lost or questionable about anything, TRiO had the answers, and if not, they do everything it takes to get you those answers. Linda Summers made anything possible for me. The TRiO staff is amazing; every time you walk in, it feels like home. I felt very comfortable, and I was able to express myself without feeling judged. They are all so caring! College felt right knowing I had such an amazing support system.
