What did you study at EvCC? / ¿Qué estudiaste en EvCC?
I came to EvCC not knowing what I wanted to major in. However, by the end of Winter quarter I discovered my calling. I am majoring in Education. I want to be a high school ethnic studies teacher and introduce ethnic studies to our educational curriculum.
Llegué a EvCC sin saber en qué quería especializarme. Sin embargo, a fines del trimestre de invierno descubrí mi vocación. Me estoy especializando en educación. Quiero ser maestra de estudios étnicos de la escuela secundaria y trabajar para introducir estudios étnicos en los currículos educativos.
Why did you choose EvCC? / ¿Por qué elegiste EvCC?
First, I was a Running Start student. I am also a first generation student. My two older sisters all came to EvCC, so they inspired me to follow in their footsteps. EvCC has provided me the opportunity to get ahead with my education and save money. I knew EvCC was the right fit for me when I became involved as a Student Ambassador. I was able to learn about the many resources this campus has to offer for their students, such as tutoring, the writing center, and de-stressing events!
Empecé como estudiante de Running Start es decir, estudiaba en la escuela secundaria mientras tomaba clases universitarias. También soy estudiante de primera generación. Mis dos hermanas mayores estudiaron en EvCC, por lo que me inspiraron a seguir sus pasos. EvCC me ha brindado la oportunidad de adelantar en mis estudios mientras ahorro dinero. Yo supe que EvCC era para mí cuando me involucré con la oficina de recursos para estudiantes. ¡Aprendí sobre lo mucho que esta universidad les ofrece a los estudiantes, como tutoría, el centro de escritura y eventos para desestresarse!
Who helped you succeed at EvCC? What did that person do to help you? / ¿Quién te ayudó a tener éxito en EvCC? ¿Qué hizo esa persona para ayudarte?
I would say that my sociology teacher, Omar Marquez, indirectly helped me succeed. I say indirectly because it was through his class that I decided to major in education. In his sociology class, I learned about many unjust historic events that weren’t explicitly taught in my high school history classes. It angered and empowered me to want to make a change to our curriculum so that schools could teach from a person of color’s perspective and to also include indigenous people’s perspective, instead of only focusing on the European perspective.
Mi profesor de sociología, Omar Márquez, me ayudó indirectamente a tener éxito. Fue a través de su clase que decidí especializarme en educación. En su clase de sociología, aprendí sobre muchos eventos históricos que fueron injustos. Esto no me los enseñaron en mis clases de historia de la escuela secundaria. Aprender sobre estos eventos me enojo y me hizo querer hacer un cambio en el sistema educativo. Quiero crear un currículo educativo para que las escuelas puedan enseñar desde la perspectiva de una persona de color y también para incluir la perspectiva de los pueblos indígenas, en lugar de centrarse solo en la perspectiva europea.
What advice do you have for someone who might be thinking about attending EvCC? / ¿Qué consejo tiene para alguien que esté pensando en asistir a EvCC?
My advice to others would be to feel proud for considering a community college. Although it didn’t have “university” in its title, EvCC is still an amazing, diverse, and beautiful campus that is worth attending.
Mi consejo para los demás es que se sientan orgullosos de considerar una universidad de dos años. EvCC tiene increíbles instalaciones. Es diversa, hermosa, y vale la pena estudiar aquí.
What do you plan to do next? / ¿Qué planeas hacer a continuación?
As of right now, I plan on graduating from EvCC with my associate's degree. I then plan to transfer to the University of Washington to continue my education as a teacher, for ethnic studies.

Describe the best experience you had at EvCC. / Describe la mejor experiencia que has tenido en EvCC.
The best experience I’ve had at EvCC is when I arrive to work. I am a Student Ambassador and I really enjoy assisting at events and working with the new friends I’ve made here. For example, the Students of Color Career Conference was one of my favorite events. What I love about EvCC is the inclusion and diversity on campus.
La mejor experiencia que he tenido en EvCC es mi trabajo. Soy una embajadora estudiantil y realmente disfruto trabajar durante eventos con nuevos amigos que he hecho aquí. Por ejemplo, Students of Color Career Conference ha sido uno de mis eventos favoritos. Lo que me encanta de EvCC es la inclusión y la diversidad que encuentras en este campus.
How did you get involved as a Student Ambassador? What opportunities has that given you? / ¿Cómo te involucraste como embajador estudiantil? ¿Qué oportunidades te ha dado este trabajo?
My siblings were Student Ambassadors when they came to EvCC. That is how I found out about how to become involved. Being an Ambassador has benefitted me because I am well informed about campus resources and events, and I have met incredible staff. It has also given me the opportunity to better my leadership skills and teamworking skills.
Mis hermanas fueron embajadoras estudiantiles cuando estudiaron en EvCC. Así es como descubrí que me podía involucrar. Ser embajadora me ha beneficiado porque estoy bien informada sobre los recursos y eventos de la universidad, y he conocido a increíbles personas. También he mejorado mis habilidades de liderazgo y trabajo en equipo.

EvCC has some of the best people here. People with big dreams. I really appreciate the beauty of this campus and the community here.
Aquí en EvCC hay personas con grandes sueños. Realmente aprecio la belleza de esta universidad y la comunidad que encontré aquí.
