EvCC's mechatronics program helped prepare Jonathan Pipes for his role in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. At Ventec Life Systms, he's part of the team providing technical service and customer support for the world's first multi-function ventilator, a crucial tool that frontline medical professionals need to save lives.

Why did you choose EvCC’s Mechatronics program?

I was interested in adding more professional and personal equity of skillset to make me more marketable and allow me the ability to pursue one of my passions.

How do you think the skills you learned at AMTEC are helping you reach your professional goals?

The skills AMTEC (Everett Community College's Advanced Manufacturing Training and Education Center) offers are great! I often reference the process and procedures learned from the book assigned to the class for Hydraulics and Pneumatics. Although I have taken a step toward bio-med and not aerospace, I know mechatronics always will play a part in anything related to engineering.

Did you have a favorite class?

Brakes and Clutches and Hydraulic and pneumatics. I often draw out ideas and thinking about the physics of how something operates. These two classes helped a lot with the structural engineering side of things.

What support did you receive that was critical to your success and persistence?

The support from my teacher Ken was always positive. Although I didn’t finish all my credits I wanted to, I paid for the knowledge, and I took pride in the facts I learned when I returned to the workforce after my injury to my back.

Who is your employer and what is your job title?

My employer is Ventec Life Systems. My current title is Failure Analysis/Service Technician.

Could you describe the work you do in this role?

I work directly with the service department and manufacturing team to support the repair and maintenance of VOCSN, Ventec's leading product. VOCSN is the world’s first Multi-Function Ventilator, which seamlessly integrates five separate devices including a ventilator, oxygen concentrator, cough assist, suction, and nebulizer into one unified respiratory system. Through a partnership between Ventec and General Motors, we are creating 30,000 critical care ventilators to give frontline medical professionals the tools they need to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and save lives.

I serve as an integral part of the team that is performing technical service and customer support to Ventec customers.
