After earning her associate degree at EvCC, Natalie VanWinkle chose to continue at the college as part of the first Bachelor of Applied Science in Accounting class. She said her instructors and the Tutoring Center are positive influences on her educational journey. When it comes to her instructors, she says, “They see the best in their students and their main goal is to help them succeed.”

Why did you choose EvCC to get your BAS?

I really feel that the instructors at EvCC go above and beyond to help you get the most out of your education. They are always eager to answer your questions and provide you with resources.

What are you studying at EvCC within the BAS program?

I am studying accounting.

Who helped you succeed at EvCC (faculty member, staff, etc.)? What did that person do to help you?

Kimberly and Matthew Lothyan have gone above and beyond to help me begin my journey into accounting. They see the best in their students and their main goal is to help them succeed. They are passionate about what they do and enthusiastic about teaching. Anytime I’ve had a question, they’ve been quick to help me figure it out.

Describe the best experience you had at EvCC.

I completed all of my prerequisites for the Nursing Program at EvCC, only to realize at the last minute that it wasn’t for me. I didn’t know what I wanted to do next, I just knew I still wanted to build on my AAS Degree. I decided to try accounting and the professors were all very supportive at EvCC. If you are willing to put in the work, they are willing to make sure you get what you deserve.

What advice do you have for new students?

Always keep the attitude of “you can do anything you put your mind to.” If you tell yourself you can’t, then you won’t fully apply yourself. There’s always a way to reach your goals, you just have to be persistent. Don’t be afraid to ask for help; it’s less scary than waiting until it’s too late.

What do you wish you'd known about EvCC sooner?

How great the Tutoring Center is!

What do you plan to do next?

I currently work in Accounts Payable for a General Contractor and I plan to continue working there through completing my BAS and after I graduate. Further out into the future, I hope to become a CPA and run my own firm.

Anything else you want to add?

Someone once told me that “attitude is everything.” I thought this was ridiculous at first, but in time, I’ve learned it’s true. There is always a way and there is always someone willing to help you. No matter how defeated you may feel at any point in time, keep pushing on. EvCC has a lot of great resources, like the Tutoring Center for example. You just have to take the first step to get the help you need.
