Student Spotlight - Sophie Howard

What advice do you have for students who are learning online for the first time?

I put a lot of unnecessary stress on myself by procrastinating, so getting things done ahead of time is really important.

What equipment do you have at home for online learning?

I use a MacBook for all my Canvas assignments and the Zoom app on my phone for online lectures.

Why did you choose EvCC?

I decided to do Running Start at EvCC because I thought it would be beneficial to me in the long run to get two years of inexpensive, quality college education by the time I graduate high school.

What are you studying?

I am pursuing an Associate of Arts and Sciences Degree and my current classes are Sociology, Chemistry, and Biology.

What has been your favorite online class, and why?

I took Children’s Literature last Winter and the content was fun and interesting, and Ms. Beebe gave really nice comments on my writing. I loved it.

Please tell us about your experience with Running Start?

Running Start was a great experience because it helped me ease into college life and course loads while still living at home. I was able to earn an associate degree in 2 years without having to pay tuition. The registration process allowed me to choose the class schedule that worked best for me, so I was able to have a part-time job and participate in sports and activities at my high school. I felt like I learned more than I could have elsewhere because class sizes were small enough that my teachers were able to pay attention to me. I’m so glad I chose to do Running Start, and I would recommend it to everyone.

What advice do you have for new Running Start students?

Use every resource available like the Tutoring Center, library, and advisors, and finish all your homework in a timely manner.

What do you plan to do next?

I’m transferring to the University of Washington next year.

Describe the best experience you had at EvCC.

I got to be a part of a STEM presentation for fifth graders from Whittier Elementary. We showed them how to make ice cream using liquid nitrogen on a hot day at the end of Spring Quarter last year. It was a lot of fun and delicious too!
