OPT Employer Reporting

Overview

F-1 regulations require that students on post-completion OPT work in their field of employment during their authorized period of OPT.  The government tracks your compliance with these regulations by requiring you to report your employment in the SEVIS portal.  You are allowed to accrue a maximum of 90 days of unemployment from the first day of OPT to the last day of OPT authorization.   You will not be considered in legal F-1 status if you exceed the 90 days limit on unemployment. Log into SEVIS portal to report when you begin OPT employment and when/if you stop working.  This should be done within 10 days of starting or stopping employment.  The form below is to assist students who are having difficulty reporting their employment or termination of employment in the SEVIS portal.

To Do Checklist:

  1. Log into the SEVP Portal to report your employment information when you begin a job or leave a job.
  2. Complete and submit the OPT Employer Update form if you are unable to report the information in the SEVP Portal.
