I-20 Update/Travel Info

Overview

The I-20 is a very important legal document with important information about your F-1 status.  The information on your I-20 should always be up to date as it reflects the official information regarding your legal status in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).

Therefore, if you change your major, you will need to complete this form to report that change to the International Education Center (IEC) so that your I-20 can be updated with the new major.  However, if the dates on your I-20 need to be changed because you need an extension in order to complete your degree, do not complete this form.  Rather refer to the information about program extension on our website or speak with an IEC staff member.

The regulations require that you have access to your I-20 while you are in the U.S. under F-1 visa status.  Thus, it is important to keep your I-20 in a secure location with your other immigration documents, such as your passport.

During your studies if you plan to travel and reenter the U.S. you will need to show your passport, a valid F-1 entry visa in your passport and your I-20.  For reentry into the U.S. your I-20 must be endorsed on page 2 with a travel signature from a Designated School Official at EvCC.  That travel signature indicates that you are enrolled full-time and pursuing the degree as outlined on page 1 of the I-20 and are in good legal status.  The travel signature is valid for one year.  Please note that there is an exception to the requirement of having a valid F-1 entry visa, called Automatic Visa Revalidation, if you are traveling to Canada or Mexico or certain Caribbean countries for less than 30 days.  Please discuss your travel plans with an IEO staff member if your visa is not valid.
