EvCC Pathways Questions and Answers

What are pathways?

Pathways are similar areas of study, commonly referred to as programs, which lead to related degrees and certificates. For example, all of the science, engineering, and math-related programs form the STEM pathway. Each pathway has a Pathway Support Team composed of entry advisors, counselors, and program advisors, who will work with you to create a plan for your education.

Do I need to pick a pathway?

Starting Fall quarter 2018, all students who want to enroll in credit classes are expected to select a pathway, including Running Start students. You will have support in the selection process during Orientation and at your Entry Advising appointment.

Students do not need to select a pathway for these classes:

  • Personal Interest
  • Non-credit classes

How and when do I pick a pathway?

Most students will select a pathway when they meet with an advisor during Entry Advising, before registering for first-quarter classes.

Why should I pick a pathway?

Students with a clear path are more likely to achieve their academic and career goals. If you don’t know exactly which program you'd like to pursue, choosing a pathway will help you narrow the choice while increasing the likelihood that the classes you take will contribute to your degree.

What if I don't know what I want to study?

No need to worry! We have resources to help you explore. Visit EvCC's Career Coach site for more information on how to find a pathway and program that works for you. You may also consider enrolling in HDEV 110: Career and Life Planning, a class with guidance to reflect on your interests and skills to aid your pathway selection and help you develop career goals. You'll be referred to resources to help you choose.

Am I stuck on a pathway forever?

No. If you decide you want to switch pathways, talk with Advising to consider other career and academic options.

I want to earn a transfer degree (Associate in Art and Sciences – Direct Transfer Agreement). Does being on a pathway change my degree?

No. EvCC still has the same degrees and certificates. Following a pathway helps you reach your academic goals, including preparing to transfer to a four-year school.
