Juneteenth 2024 Community Celebrations

June 1
8:00am
to June 30
9:00pm

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation (January 1, 1863), the last enslaved African American people were freed in Galveston, Texas. More recently, on June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the bill making Juneteenth the eleventh American federal holiday and the first to obtain legal observance as a federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was designated in 1983. This historic recognition marks a significant milestone in acknowledging the struggles and achievements of African Americans and serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for equity and justice for all. Juneteenth celebrations honor this legacy of resilience and commemorate the ongoing journey towards a more inclusive and equitable society for all.

Everett Community College campuses and online services will be unavailable in observance of Juneteenth on June 19, 2024, we will be back to regular operations on on June 20, 2024. However, here is a list of events for celebration and reflection as we commemorate Juneteenth in Snohomish, King, and Pierce counties during the entire month of June! From educational workshops to exciting cultural performances, these Juneteenth events happening around Western Washington offer something for everyone. Engage in discussions about the significance of this historic day, enjoy live music and dance performances showcasing the richness of African American culture, and participate in community-led initiatives promoting social justice and equality. Come together with friends, family, and neighbors to honor the legacy of freedom and resilience while reaffirming our commitment to creating a more just and inclusive society. Check out the schedule of events below and join us in honoring this important day in American history.

Finals Are a Drag ... Show!

June 12
7:00pm
to
10:00pm

It’s that time of the year again! Break away from your clockwork routine and join us on June 12 in Jackson 101 for a night of fabulousness at Everett Community College’s 11th annual Finals Are a Drag ... Show! A drag show is a performance which includes individuals impersonating other genders, usually through dancing, singing, or comedy. Drag performers and transgender women of color were seen at the front of the 1969 Stonewall Riots, which helped ignite the LGBTQIA+ liberation movement. A drag show is an overall celebration of art, talent, and diversity. Most of all, this event celebrates the right for individuals to be themselves.

Doors will open at 7pm (though the show starts at 8pm), so please come early to get a seat, as this is the most attended event on campus every year! You can grab a drink while listening to a live DJ before the show starts. Entrance is FREE, please bring your friends and family but be advised that this performance does contain mature content. Tips for the performers are encouraged and appreciated.
