Juneteenth 2024 Community Celebrations

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation (January 1, 1863), the last enslaved African American people were freed in Galveston, Texas. More recently, on June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the bill making Juneteenth the eleventh American federal holiday and the first to obtain legal observance as a federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was designated in 1983. This historic recognition marks a significant milestone in acknowledging the struggles and achievements of African Americans and serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for equity and justice for all. Juneteenth celebrations honor this legacy of resilience and commemorate the ongoing journey towards a more inclusive and equitable society for all.

Everett Community College campuses and online services will be unavailable in observance of Juneteenth on June 19, 2024, we will be back to regular operations on on June 20, 2024. However, here is a list of events for celebration and reflection as we commemorate Juneteenth in Snohomish, King, and Pierce counties during the entire month of June! From educational workshops to exciting cultural performances, these Juneteenth events happening around Western Washington offer something for everyone. Engage in discussions about the significance of this historic day, enjoy live music and dance performances showcasing the richness of African American culture, and participate in community-led initiatives promoting social justice and equality. Come together with friends, family, and neighbors to honor the legacy of freedom and resilience while reaffirming our commitment to creating a more just and inclusive society.
