Software Testing Careers

photo of CCEC instructor Bruce CronquistAre you already a software tester? Make it your career!

  • Can you name a mistake in a book or a movie?
  • Do you use Microsoft Office or Facebook?
  • Have you ever searched for something using Google or Bing?

If so, you are already involved in software testing!

Where there is software, there are bugs. Spotting continuity errors, or identifying if something just doesn’t seem right, is a skill a tester needs. Office sends telemetry on how you use the product, which helps the Office test team to mimic real world use of the product in their testing. Facebook releases a new version of the product every few minutes. Sometimes only a few people get the new version as a test before it is rolled out to everyone. That's called Testing in Production. And Google and Bing use the search results you click on to improve the next person's experience.

If you like to solve puzzles and improve products, then software testing might be the perfect career for you.

Fortune Magazine identifies software quality assurance engineers and testers as among the top-rated in-demand jobs for US job-seekers. And according to CareerBliss, it is the second happiest IT job in existence. A career in software testing offers many pathways. You can specialize in security testing, create/support testing tools, become DevOps, specialize in testing in production, or become a data scientist if you are into math and stats.

CCEC’s software testing program does not expect you to be a coder. We start out with basic skills and build on them throughout each course. At each step we apply what we've learned by practicing testing methodologies that include cloud testing, SCRUM, dev operations, and Agile. We explore practical examples of testing: a Nerf gun, remote control paper airplanes, Roomba vacuum system, drones, a fork, and more. By the end, you will have walked through the complete Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) a couple of times. You will walk out with knowledge and practical experience, all of which you can put on your LinkedIn profile and resume.

Speaking of LinkedIn, this program also weaves in career development and job hunting experience. You'll have a chance to talk with testers in the industry and a career coach.
