Teaching Online at EvCC

Each year, Everett Community College offers hundreds of online course sections in numerous departments. Online courses can support students who choose to learn online for many reasons: distance from the college; personal and professional obligations that affect their ability to attend some classes in person; health conditions; limited transportation options; and more. Consequently, EvCC's online course offerings are an important part of our mission to provide equitable access to education and to support our students' aspirations. This page contains information for faculty who are interested in teaching online and would like to learn more about our online teaching certification requirements, professional development opportunities, and available resources to support online teaching.

Online Teaching Certification

Faculty who wish to teach online courses at EvCC must first complete the college's online teaching certification requirements and discuss available online teaching assignments with their division's dean. The online teaching certification process consists of two components:

  • The Fundamentals of Online Teaching, a five-week online course developed at EvCC and facilitated by a member of the eLearning Department. To learn about upcoming sessions and how to register, visit the CTT Workshop Calendar.
  • An individual course consultation with a member of the eLearning Department to review your course design and discuss your online teaching goals. The WA Course Design Checklist is used for the consultation.

Faculty who complete these requirements within a single academic year will be eligible to receive a one-time payment in recognition of their achievement. Instructors who can demonstrate they have completed comparable requirements at another educational institution may request a waiver from these requirements.

If you have any question about our online teaching certification process or the Fundamentals of Online Teaching course, please contact us using the information on the right side of this page.

Other Professional Development and Training

The eLearning Department and the Center for Transformative Teaching offer a variety of professional development opportunities for EvCC faculty and staff. Consult our workshops page, consider participating in the annual Course Design Institute, or contact us to schedule an individual consultation or one-on-one training session with a member of the department.

Washington's State Board for Community and Technical Colleges also offers several asynchronous online courses for college employees. Of particular interest are:

  • Canvas 101: Introduction to Canvas
  • Accessibility 101: The Basics of Inclusive Design
  • OER 101: How to Use Open Educational Resources

Registration for all of these courses is free to employees of Everett Community College. (Note, however, that failure to complete a course for which you register may result in a fee being charged -- consult the registration information for details). If you have questions about any of these courses, please contact the eLearning department.
