Student Spotlight - Angela Harris

Angela Harris, is pursuing a degree in information technology at Everett Community College to build a stable future for her child. A single parent, she chose EvCC for its flexibility, supportive community, and strong IT program. The hands-on skills she has gained at EvCC, along with support from professors, advisors, and programs like TRiO and MESA, have been instrumental in her success. “Stay focused on your goals and don’t be afraid to seek help when needed,” Harris advises new students. “Every step you take brings you closer to your dreams.”

Tell me a little bit about yourself, including the degree or certificate you’re working toward.

I'm a solo parent of a small child, determined to create a better future for both of us. I'm currently working toward a degree in Information Technology (IT) at Everett Community College (EvCC). I chose this path because I believe in the power of education to transform lives, and I want to be financially independent and provide a stable, supportive environment for my child. Balancing school and parenthood is challenging, but it fuels my determination to succeed.

Why did you choose EvCC?

I chose EvCC because of its proximity to home and the flexibility it offers. As a mother, it's essential for me to stay close to my child and manage my responsibilities effectively. The flexible curriculum at EvCC allows me to balance my studies with my parenting duties. Moreover, the IT program at EvCC is well-regarded and aligns perfectly with my interests and career goals. The supportive and inclusive campus culture also played a significant role in my decision.

What interested you about your area of study?

The field of Information Technology fascinates me because of its constant growth and innovation. I am particularly drawn to the problem-solving aspects and the potential to create and improve systems that people rely on daily. IT is a dynamic field with endless opportunities, and it provides the flexibility I need to maintain a healthy work-life balance. The diverse range of careers within IT means that I can find a role that suits my skills and interests while providing financial stability for my family.

How do you think the skills you learned at EvCC are helping you reach your goals?

The skills I've acquired at EvCC are instrumental in helping me achieve my goals. From foundational programming and network management to more advanced topics like cybersecurity and data analysis, the comprehensive curriculum has equipped me with the knowledge and practical skills needed in the IT industry. Additionally, the hands-on projects and real-world applications have given me the confidence to tackle complex challenges. These skills are not only preparing me for a successful career but also empowering me to be a role model for my child.

Who has helped you succeed at EvCC? What did that person do to help you?

Multiple people and programs have helped me succeed here at EvCC. People including Professors and Advisors, such as Ryan Masinelli, Andrea Cahan, and Dennis Skarr. Also programs like TRiO and MESA to clubs has been instrumental in my success at EvCC. Their dedication to teaching and genuine interest in students' progress made a significant impact on my learning experience. They provided guidance, encouragement, and valuable feedback on my work. Additionally, they helped me navigate the challenges of balancing school and parenthood by offering flexibility and understanding. Their support and mentorship have been invaluable, and I am deeply grateful for their role in my academic journey.

What do you plan to do next?

After completing my degree, I plan to enter the IT field and start a career that will provide financial stability for my family. I am particularly interested in roles that involve networking and cybersecurity, as these areas align with my skills and interests. Additionally, I hope to continue learning and growing professionally through certifications and further education. Ultimately, I aspire to be a positive influence in the tech community and advocate for more, non traditional, women, and solo parents in the field.

What advice do you have for new students?

My advice for new students is to stay focused on your goals and don't be afraid to seek help when needed. Balancing school with other responsibilities can be challenging, but it's essential to stay determined and resilient. Build a support network of friends, family, and mentors who can offer guidance and encouragement. Take advantage of the resources and opportunities available at EvCC, join clubs and attend events. Remember that every step you take brings you closer to your dreams, and that growth is not linear. Believe in yourself and stay committed to your journey—you have the power to achieve great things.
