EVERETT, Wash. – Everett Community College theatre instructor Beth Peterson is having a busy month.

Two of her plays will be performed on stage. A reading of one of her other plays is happening at a major Seattle theatre.

At 7 p.m. Tuesday, the Northwest Playwrights Alliance is hosting a reading of her play “Bully” at the Seattle Reparatory Theatre. The reading is free and open to the public.

At 7 p.m. Feb. 21, Western Washington University theater students will perform Peterson’s sketch “Guido in Therapy” and other short plays at EvCC. The Western students will then perform throughout the Pacific Northwest, in England and New York City.

On Feb. 26, her original dark comedy “Evil Twin” is on stage for the first time for a six-performance run 7:30 p.m. Feb. 26-28 and March 5-7 at EvCC’s Baker Hall, room 120.

“Beth Peterson is a true theatrical triple threat: a talented teacher, actor, and playwright,” said Jeanne Leader, EvCC Dean of Arts and Learning Resources. “She's a great example of an artist who works diligently at her craft and contributes an impressive range of original work for the stage.”

Peterson, of Seattle, regularly writes new material.

“Often times, with my work, I find the characters want to have their own voice. It has been a very interesting journey finding out what these particular people have to say about their world,” Peterson said.

In her play “Bully,” a research psychiatrist, working on an experimental treatment for the victims of bullying, explores the power of memory and past circumstances in creating current personality tendencies.

Her sketch “Guido in Therapy” is the hilarious tale of a woman and her cat visiting a psychiatrist for help with their relationship.

“Evil Twin,” is a futuristic take on the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The dark comedy thriller is the story of twin brothers and a corporation that may have created a monster.

In addition to teaching at EvCC, Peterson is on staff at Seattle Sketch Festival. She has worked with Annex Theatre, Theatre Schmeatre, Book It Rep and the former Empty Space Theatre Company.

At EvCC, students can earn an Associate of Arts and Science (Direct Transfer Agreement) with an emphasis in theatre or take theatre classes in addition to courses for their major.

“Theatre is about sharing stories. About listening, and being heard.  In a time when we are losing connection within our society, theatre helps to create community,” Peterson said.
