EVERETT, Wash. – Everett Community College is naming its basketball court in honor of retired athletic director and men's basketball coach Larry Walker at a celebration Oct. 20.

The court dedication will occur following the EvCC women’s basketball game, which begins at 4 p.m. at the Walt Price Student Fitness Center, 2206 Tower St. in Everett. After the dedication, the EvCC men’s basketball team will play. At both games, current players will face off against Trojan basketball alumni. The games are free and open to the public.

“We are thrilled to have this opportunity to recognize Larry for the countless hours of service and dedication to this college and generations of Trojan student-athletes. Naming this court inside of the beautiful facility that he helped build is the perfect way to honor Larry,” said EvCC Athletic Director Garet Studer, who succeeded Walker.

Walker started in education at Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane in 1975. He came to EvCC in 1985 as the men’s basketball coach, and in 1986 he became athletic coordinator. In 2001, he was appointed as the college’s athletic director. He was integral in bringing back sports that had long ago been eliminated at EvCC including baseball, volleyball and cross country. He also was a key player in the design of the Walt Price Student Fitness Center.

Throughout his 30-year tenure, hundreds of athletes came through the program and became teachers, coaches and mentors to youth. Some of Walker’s players have coached at the high school level, locally, at Marysville Getchell, Marysville-Pilchuck, Arlington, Meadowdale and Shorewood, as well as at the college level at EvCC and Western Washington University.

Larry and his wife Carey have three children and their spouses, Kelli (Jeremy Hawkinson), Darrell (Abby), and Julie (Scott Martin) and eight grandchildren: Jadyn, Kaleb, Ethan, Leyton, Kade, Jersey, Finley and Landrey. The entire Walker family has been a big part of the EvCC athletic program. Darrell Walker played for his father’s team (with his future brother-in-law Scott) and coached with his dad for several years, and Kelli Walker played on the EvCC women’s basketball team. Kelli's husband, Jeremy, attended EvCC, and Julie has worked as an instructor here.

The family's contributions will long be remembered, and in Walker's honor, EvCC's Board of Trustees voted in 2018 to name this court Larry Walker Court.
