National Science Foundation awards $649,961 grant to EvCC for low-income STEM students

EVERETT, Wash. – The National Science Foundation is giving Everett Community College a $649,961 grant for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) scholarships and support for low-income students.

The grant, which will be paid out over five years, is part of a larger effort to recruit and retain a more diverse STEM student population.

“This grant is going to be a huge help for students. Not only will they get a strong start at the college in the summer STEM Bridge program, but they'll get ongoing support with faculty mentoring and scholarships for the whole time they're at EvCC,” said EvCC physics instructor Kristine Washburn, who co-authored the grant.

The $5,000 scholarships will be awarded every year to 15 of the students selected for the STEM Bridge program for high school seniors.

Funded through a NASA grant, students in the STEM Bridge program receive free tuition, fees and books for 12 credits of science and math classes during summer quarter. They may also qualify for additional support from the federal TRiO student support services program.

To qualify for the summer quarter STEM bridge program and scholarship funds, students must be high school seniors, U.S. citizens, Washington state residents and able to attend summer quarter July 3 to Aug. 24.

Apply for the STEM Bridge program at EverettCC.edu/STEMbridge. The deadline to apply is March 30.
