EVERETT, Wash. – The Clipper, Everett Community College’s independent student newspaper, won three first-place awards —  and seven total — in the 2022 Pacific Northwest Association of Journalism Educators (PNAJE) annual competition.

The contest covered student-produced news, features, headlines and visuals from spring 2021 through winter 2022.

Clipper Advisor Vanessa McVay, a Journalism and Media Communications faculty member praised Clipper staff for creating award-winning journalism during a difficult year.

“Clipper staff returned to in-person classes, struggled with COVID-19 infections and survived all the rest of the personal and academic chaos that was thrown at them, and still managed to cover stories that matter to the EvCC community and put out the first print edition of The Clipper since the pandemic began,” McVay said.

In the Sports category, Joshua Amick, Clipper editor-in-chief from winter 2021 through spring 2022, grabbed first for his story “Trojan Basketball Guard Cam Millican Comes in Strong;” Calvin Emerson took first place for his review of “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” in the Reviews category; and Nate Feaster won top prize in the multimedia category for his video, “Back to Campus Quick Guide.”

In addition, Colin Burns took second place in Reviews for “Squid Games is Really Clever Until It Isn't.”

The Clipper garnered three third-place awards, including: Elena Cervantes, General news reporting, for “Women Supporting Women;” Gerard Millman, Feature reporting, for “The Immersive Learning Technology of EvCC's Nursing Program;” and Mikayla Finnerty, Photo illustration and/or graphics, for “Mental Health Awareness Month.”

All of the winning work is available on The Clipper website at EverettClipper.com

The PNAJE contest drew 275 entries and was open to schools from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. It has divisions for both 2-year and 4-year schools. This year it was judged by the Utah College Media Alliance.
