Financial Aid for Undocumented Students

Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA)

The Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA) is designed to provide state financial aid to students ineligible for federal aid due to their immigration status, including undocumented students and DACA recipients.

Important Note: WASFA replaces the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for undocumented students in Washington State. Upon successful completion, the financial information provided will be used by the chosen college(s) to determine eligibility for Washington State aid.

Confidentiality: Information provided through the WASFA is protected under FERPA and will not be shared with third parties.

Residency Information

A new state law, Senate Bill 5194 makes it easier to be a Washington resident for tuition and financial aid purposes. The law replaces HB 1079.  

You may now qualify for residency if you: 

  • Earn a high school diploma, GED, or diploma equivalent before your first term at the college determining residency. 
  • Have lived in Washington for at least for 12 months before your first term at the college determining residency 
  • Signed the Residency Affidavit included in the WASFA. 

Please note: SB 5194 does not change a student's legal citizenship status. The law means that students who qualify will pay the same tuition rates that all other resident students pay.

For those students who meet the qualifications for SB 5194, here are your steps for Financial Aid:

  1. Complete the WAFSA application. External Site Link
  2. Check your WASFA award in the Financial Aid Student Portal. External Site Link
  3. Review the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy for continued WASFA funding (assuming WASFA students are tied to same SAP standards as FAFSA students).

DACA Financial Aid Details

Students who have DACA, have graduated from high school or have a GED, and who have lived in Washington for at least 12 months may be eligible for WASFA. See the DACA page for details about residency.

For student with DACA who meet graduation and residency requirements, here are your steps for Financial Aid:

  1. Complete the State Residency Questionnaire  and submit it with supporting paperwork to Enrollment Services
