EvCC student journalists win 15 regional awards

EVERETT, Wash. – Everett Community College student journalists won 15 awards from the Pacific Northwest Association of Journalism Educators for their work with the college’s student media organization, The Clipper.

The PNAJE competition was open to community colleges from Idaho, Oregon and Washington.

Monica Aguilera, who graduated in spring 2016, scored The Clipper’s sole first place honor for a cover illustration for the Prince memorial issue. Visual journalist Katja Wahl took home the most awards with five: a second place and four honorable mentions for photo packages on topics ranging from homelessness in North Everett to the Women’s March in Seattle.

Abby Tutor, The Clipper’s 2016-17 editor-in-chief and incoming Editor-in-Chief John Yeager both received two awards. Other PNAJE winners for student-journalism work done at EvCC include Ricky Hester, Emma Kilgore, Brooke Robbinson and Joanne Wu.

EverettClipper.com was named the second best website and The Clipper staff earned a third-place nod for best use of multimedia. In recent years, the staff has come to see The Clipper website as its primary delivery channel, with the print edition playing a complementary role.

“The Clipper has shifted in the past few years to a web-first mindset,” Tutor said. “Our mission is to utilize the web as a powerful tool for multimedia storytelling and it’s exciting to be recognized for our efforts in making that happen.”

EvCC journalism instructor T. Andrew Wahl, The Clipper’s faculty adviser, was impressed with his students’ performance and their commitment to journalistic excellence.

“Given the challenging times we live in, journalism has never been more important,” Wahl said. “The staff of The Clipper dedicate hundreds of hours to that calling. It’s great to see them recognized for all that hard work.”
