Cybersecurity Awareness Tips

Cybersecurity Awareness Tip #1

Cybersecurity is everyone’s responsibility. The physical security of your devices is just as important as their technical security.

If you need to leave your desktop computer or your laptop, please lock it up so no one else can use it. You can simply press and hold the Windows logo key on your keyboard (this key should appear next to the Alt key), and then press the L key. Your computer will be locked, and the Windows login screen will be displayed. If you are using a Mac just press Control, Command, and Q. You can also log off Windows by pressing Control, Alt, Delete, and select Sign out. On a Mac, press Shift, Command, and Q.

Also, don’t leave your phone (or tablet) unattended and unlocked, it has a lot of personal information that can be harmful in the wrong hands.

Cybersecurity Awareness Tip #2

Using a strong password is extremely important to keep your online accounts secure. Long passwords are stronger, so make your password at least 14 characters long. A strong password should be memorable to you but nearly impossible for someone else to guess. Passphrases are easier to remember. It can be a good idea to use a variation on a meaningful phrase or quote, like:

“One for all and all for one”: The Three Musketeers. A secure password out of that can be 14A&A413Mu$keteers!

How about, “You will always miss 100 percent of the shots that you never take,” from Wayne Gretzky? Here, ywAM100%ot$tyN+

Lastly, use a different password or passphrase for each of your accounts. Reusing passwords is pretty risky. If someone gets that password they will gain access to all your accounts.
