What are Emergency Medical Services? What is an EMT?

Emergency Medical Services include all first-responder, pre-hospital medical care. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is an entry-level position ($12-19/hr starting) and can work for:

  • Private ambulance companies
  • Public fire service (firefighter academy certificates are also required)

EMTs with at least 1-2 years of experience may continue their EMS training with paramedic certification ($65,000/year starting). Other areas EMT students pursue include nursing, pre-medical 4-year degrees, or other medical certifications.

EMS 151 EMT: What Credentials Does This Course Offer & Upcoming Offerings

Everett Community College's EMT course, EMS 151 (13 credits), is a 1-quarter (12-week) course that will give you:

  • a college academic certificate that can be stacked toward a 2-year degree (e.g. the Fire Science AAS-T or Associate of Arts & Sciences DTA degrees)
  • prepare you for the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) exam, a professional certification to work as an EMT across the United States. Please note, additional skills or training may be required in states other than Washington. Students who obtain an NREMT training certificate must find employment within 12 months in order to re-certify with a Washington State EMT-Basic professional certificate, or their training certification will lapse and they will need to re-take the full EMT course to obtain NREMT certification again; only some experienced EMTs are eligible for refresher courses.

The EMS 151 EMT course is offered 3 times each year (currently, no summer course or refresher is available):
Pre-course online assignments begin no later than 1 week prior to course start date.

Course Schedule, Time Commitment, and Expectations

Take the EMT course while working: This course is designed to be compatible for students who are working regular full-time job hours. However, it is an intensive course and students are discouraged from taking additional credits while they’re completing this course.

Class hours begin the Saturday prior to the regular academic quarter and conclude the Saturday following finals week. This course both has face-to-face and online components.

  • Saturdays 8:00 or 8:30 am–5:00 pm Drill/Lab Hours, in person
  • Mondays 6:30 pm–10:00 pm Lectures, in-person
  • Wednesdays 6:30 pm–10:00 pm Lectures, in person

You will also need to schedule 5 hours of ridealong hours on an emergency transport and 5 hours of clinical hours in an ER 10 ridealong, that fit with your personal schedule and coordinated with the course instructor after the course begins (may be waived during COVID-19).

Study, Homework, and Preparation: In addition to class and clinical hours, the time commitment is considerable; you should expect an additional 30 hours each week, including:

  • 15 hours of online pre-course training and assignments prior to the first day of class
  • Self-directed study group review hours outside of class time
  • Reading approximately 8 textbook chapters per week
  • Completing 3 online quizzes or tests per week, including pre-and post-quizzes online homework

Attendance Requirements: EMT coursework cannot be made up and certain days are mandatory. Due to the volume of course material and certification requirements, you can only miss 2 days of class, or a maximum of 11.5 hours, regardless of the reason, before receiving an instructor withdrawal (fail), since at that point you would be ineligible to test for NREMT certification.

  • The final exam for a course grade and college certificate takes place just prior to the end of the course.
  • The practical half of the NREMT exam takes place on the final day of this course.
  • Students who are successful will then schedule the written half of the NREMT exam on their own at a nearby exam provider (usually within 3 weeks of completing the course).

How to Apply

Each course offering has a capacity of 35 students. The course may fill up just prior to the application deadline, however, we encourage you to complete an application at your earliest convenience (50% of students who register during the last week of the application period are unable to complete the pre-course assignments and withdraw.)

Application to the EMS 151 EMT course must be completed in addition to being enrolled at EvCC. Applicants must complete high school or GED requirements by the start date of the course. There are 7 application requirements that usually take at least 2 weeks to complete.
You will need to access the online application itself for full instructions and details.

  • Personal Information
  • Photo ID (Your ID must show that you will be 18 years of age by the start date of the course you are applying for)
  • Proof of Health Insurance
  • Establish Placement at EvCC for Eligibility for ENGL 097 or higher and MATH 086 or higher
  • Basic Life Support Certification
  • Required Immunities and Related Tests

You will need an EvCC student account and number in order to access the application. To do this, if you've not already, begin the EvCC Enrollment Steps and complete Step 2 Admissions.

Once you have a student username and password, you must follow the following link to self-enroll in the application (do not use your student# and PIN):

https://everettcc.instructure.com/enroll/LW9EMK

Once you have an EvCC student account, you will need to sign in with your EvCC student username and password, not your SID# and PIN. If you are a returning student, you may need to change/update your password. If you are still experiencing challenges accessing the application, please email the Technology Services TechHUB at techhub@everettcc.edu and CC: eLearning at elearning@everettcc.edu to troubleshoot.

The application site is a self-directed process.

Program personnel will begin to review application materials approximately 2 months prior to the application deadline.
Once review begins, applicants are accepted on a first-come, first-served, rolling basis, as of completing all requirements of the application.

Applicants who have completed applications may need to wait a few weeks to receive an acceptance email that contains a registration permission code and next steps to prepare for the course.

Completed applications are eligible for any EMT course in a given academic year: fall, winter, or spring. If the course you apply for is full, completed applications will be added to a wait list. We cannot predict how many spaces might open up. Students may not join the course after the final registration deadline (1 week prior to course start).
