Geology 208: Field Exploration of the Skagit

5-Credit Geology Field Course Offered Spring Quarter 2018

Why should you take this course?

  • Learning outside is more fun!
  • Satisfies a Natural Science Lab requirement
  • No textbook costs!
  • Meets every Friday, won't conflict with most classes
  • Relevant scientific inquiry

Course Overview

This course will prepare you for future coursework in the natural sciences while providing a fun introduction to the magical landscapes we call home.  The course is intended as an introductory exploration of the Skagit Watershed.  Through field observations and discussions, we will seek to unravel the geologic story of an astonishingly fertile agricultural landscape, the Skagit Valley.  As we trace the Skagit sediments upstream throughout the Skagit Watershed, we will uncover much of Washington's geologic history as well, including landslides, earthquakes, glaciers, and volcanoes.  Along the way, you will learn critical field skills such as sediment analysis and landform interpretation.  Emphasis will be on active, collaborative, and student-driven learning.

Itinerary

Friday, April 6: meet at EvCC for introductory class and to discuss trip logistics

Every Friday, April 13 - June 8: Field work, leaving campus at 9 am and returning by 5 pm (9 days total)

Required Gear/Materials

Students should be prepared with comfortable hiking boots or shoes, clothing for all weather conditions (rain jacket is a must!), and a daypack.  There are no textbook costs; however, there is a lab/field trip fee that will cover all associated costs, including transportation.

Hiking

Field explorations will require hiking on steep and uneven terrain.  The longest hike on our itinerary is 3 miles each way, but most trips are much shorter.  Anticipate climbing over fallen trees, sliding down river banks, getting muddy and wet, and generally having a good time.  Note that we will be out in the field all day, regardless of the weather.
