What Credentials Does This Course Offer & Upcoming Offerings
Everett Community College’s Firefighter Academy course, FIRE 100 (22.5 credits), is a 1-quarter (12-week) course that will give you:
- 22.5 academic credits that can be put toward a 2-year degree (e.g. the Fire Science AAS-T or Associate of Arts & Sciences DTA degrees)
-
The following professional certifications completed as part of the course, issued by the Washington State Fire Marshal, and meet fire suppression and hazmat containment professional requirements for structural firefighting in Washington State. (These certificates also meet national and international standards of the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), however transferability outside Washington State may vary):
- Firefighter I
- Firefighter II
- Hazardous Materials Awareness
- Hazardous Materials Operations
Students who obtain these certifications keep them for life. These, along with an EMT certificate, are required to work most structural (urban area) firefighting jobs in Washington State, whether full-time career or part-time positions. (Wildland Certification and military firefighting certifications do not qualify.)
(While the Fire Science AAS-T degree is not required to work, it can make you a more competitive job applicant, offer you a higher starting salary at many full-time departments, and make you eligible for promotional opportunities. Attend an information session to learn more.)
The FIRE 100 Firefighter Academy course is offered 2–3 times each year (currently no summer academy; winter is held sometimes).
Course Schedule, Time Commitment, and Expectations
This course is designed to be compatible for students who are working regular full-time job hours. However, it is an intensive course and students are discouraged from taking additional credits while they’re completing this course.
Class hours begin prior to the regular academic quarter, usually on a Friday, and conclude the Saturday following finals week. This course both has face-to-face and online components.
- Saturdays 8:00 am–6:00 pm Drills/Labs, held in person at various drill facilities around Snohomish County
- Tuesdays 6:00 pm–10:00 pm Lectures, most will be online live streamed
- Thursdays 6:00 pm–10:00 pm Lectures, most will be held in person on the EvCC campus
TBD: Each academy will schedule other all-day Friday and Sunday sessions for technical drills and 1–3 all-day weekday sessions for live fire drills and testing (when possible, at the Washington State Fire Academy in North Bend).
Firefighter Academy coursework usually cannot be made up and certain days are mandatory. Due to the volume of course material and certification requirements, please ensure that you will be available for all course days and times prior to applying.
How to Apply
Application to the FIRE 100 Firefighter Academy course must be completed in addition to being enrolled at EvCC.
Each academy offering has a capacity of 32 students.
There are 5 application requirements—you will need to access the application itself for full instructions and details.

You may need to change your password/follow the Forgot Password link. If you are still experiencing challenges accessing the application, please email the Technology Services TechHUB at techhub@everettcc.edu and CC: eLearning at elearning@everettcc.edu to troubleshoot.
Applicant Review Process
- Application is competitive and space is limited (maximum capacity is 32 students per academy), so we recommend that you begin your application early.
- Program personnel will begin reviewing application materials 2–3 months prior to each academy.
- Accepted applications are eligible for any Firefighter Academy for the next 12 months. If the course you apply for is full, completed applications will be added to a waitlist. Spaces will usually open up but we won't know exactly how many until the course starts, and may extend an offer to you to join after that time.
