What's a Cost of Attendance Budget?

The Cost of Attendance Budget (COA) represents the estimated cost of attending Everett Community College for 9 months, or three full-time terms.  This includes fixed amounts, such as tuition and fees, as well as amounts that must be estimated, such as room and board, food, books, transportation, and personal expenses (laundry, toothbrushes, etc.) The purpose of this budget is to provide you with an idea of what your expenses might for the terms you will attend EvCC. 

Once the COA Budget is established by the Financial Aid Office, aid can be offered in accordance with Federal and State regulations, taking into account the student's need as established by the FAFSA or WAFSA application (COA Budget - Student Aid Index (SAI) - Other Finacial Assistance = Need). 

Cost of Attendance (COA)  is only an estimate, based upon the average expenses of all students. These costs therefore, do not necessarily represent every expense a student might incur throughout a given year. Your actual experience may be different from these averages based on your own personal spending choices and on how many courses you take each quarter.

Determining Financial Need

Everett Community College uses the following formula to determine a student's financial need and eligibility for financial aid:

Cost of Attendance - Student Aid Index - Other Financial Assistance = Financial Need

Student Aid Index (SAI)  comes from the FAFSA  or WASFA and represents what a family should reasonably be able to contribute towards a student's education-related expenses

Other Financial Assistance (OFA) are grants, scholarships, loans or other funding a student receives from an individual or organization separate from the Federal, State, and includes Institutional funding awarded by the Financial Aid Office.

Need based aid, such as Federal, State and Institutional Grants, Work-Study, and Loans can be offered up to the established need amount. Loans such as the Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan can be offered beyond the need, up to the Federal maximums allowed. The total of all financial aid offered, however, cannot exceed the COA Budget, as established by the Financial Aid Office. The COA Budgets below are approximate. The actual budgets used to package aid may vary slightly to comply with tuition changes, loan fee consideration, etc.

• Starting 2024-2025 Academic Year, which begins with Summer 2024, there have been some terminology changes under the FAFSA Simplication Act.
  • Student Aid Report (SAR) will be replaced with the FAFSA Submission Summary upon completing the FAFSA
  • Expected Family Contribution will be replaced by Student Aid Index (SAI). This SAI number will be listed on your FAFSA Submission Summary upon completing the FAFSA 
  • Your assigned budget is determined by how you answered questions on the FAFSA or WASFA, and the EFC / SAI is determined by the federal or state processor based in part on your family size and income.

The Cost of Attendance includes only a portion of living expenses related to the cost of attending college. It is not meant to reflect every expense or circumstance a student or a student’s family may have.

These budgets reflect full-time, nine month enrollments, average 45 credits (15 credits per term). These budgets reflect full-time, nine month enrollments, average 45 credits (15 credits per term). Cost of Attendance - Defined components

Tuition & Fees
Estimated tuition and fees in the initial Cost of Attendance is averaged at 15 credits. Actual tuition and fees are based on your enrollment status (12 or more credits is full-time, 9-11.5 credits is three-quarter time, 6-8.5 credits is half-time and 5 credits or less is less-than-half-time). Books
The books estimate reflects the typical cost of all books and supplies for attending EvCC courses. Some programs may have higher or lower books and supply costs. It may be possible to obtain books below those estimates, and students are encouraged to consider other alternatives when possible, such as used books, textbook rental, e-books, etc.

Housing and Food
EvCC estimates housing and food costs for different categories of students, based on US Bureau of Labor Statistics data from the State of Washington. The room and board budget component include basic rent, utilities and food costs for the amount of calendar time in the period of enrollment. For a standard three quarter COA Budget, this is approximately nine months. For a one quarter COA Budget, this is approximately three months.

Transportation
This reflects the typical cost of traveling to attend class. This again is an average, and your actual experience may be different based upon your transportation choices.
Some transportation-related costs cannot be included, such as:

• the purchase of a vehicle
• insurance
• major repairs

Personal
EvCC includes an estimate of personal expenses for the time that a student is enrolled. These costs are averages. Your actual experience depends upon your personal choices. Estimated personal expenses include:

• hygiene items
• clothing
• social activities
• other personal needs

Final Note: It is important to keep in mind that you control many of your costs and can make adjustments in your budget to make sure that you can cover your costs.
