Voices of EvCC - Jean Berkey

Washington State Sen. Jean Berkey (1938-2013) said her experience at Everett Community College helped inspire her passion for higher education.

Jean, who served as a State Senator for the 38th Legislative District from 2004 to 2010, earned her associate’s degree at EvCC and served as a member of the college’s board of trustees.

Jean was nine years old when her father, Harold Burroughs, got a job at Everett Junior College, and moved the family to Everett. Her dad became chairman of the Social Sciences Department.

Jean became an Everett Junior College student in 1956, attending school for a quarter before getting a job with the phone company. She returned to Everett Community College in 1971 to finish her degree.

After EvCC, she transferred to the University of Washington and earned her business degree, then worked in accounting, engineering and human resources.

In 1985, she became a member of the Everett Community College Board of Trustees. She was chairwoman in 1987 when EvCC’s Cascade Hall was destroyed by arson, killing Everett firefighter Gary Parks.

In 2007, Jean was selected as an EvCC Distinguished Alumni, the highest honor the college gives to alumni, honoring her many years of service to the community.

In addition to the Senate, Jean also served in the House of Representatives from 2001-2003. She chaired the Senate Financial Institutions Housing and Insurance Committee and was a member of the Senate Transportation Committee.
