Big Belly Compactors

Big belly trash compactors

EvCC currently has 8 of these solar-powered trash compactor and recycling stations on campus. The Big Bellies have increased the amount of recyclables collected at EvCC by providing convenient receptacles, and decreased the volume of garbage destined for landfills by compacting waste 3 times before the device is full. Custodial staff can check the waste level of individual compactors via an online program, which reduces the need to check individual receptacles to see if they are full.

Earth Day Through the Years - 2010

EvCC employees share their memories of the past four decades of Earth Day celebrations for the 40th Earth Day on April 22, 2010.

Memories of the first Earth Day, 1970

"I remember our high school chemistry teacher gathering a group to learn about the issues and take some action. On Earth Day, we went out and collected garbage. What I learned made a life-long impression. What I remember most is learning about the importance of recycling and cutting down on garbage, and of conserving gas by driving a small car and thinking about my driving. I still try to conserve gas by driving as little as possible, recycle everything, compost, and am down to monthly garbage service. Miss Carrabba would be happy to know that I did learn a lot from her besides chemistry!" - Nancy Vandenberg, Nutrition Instructor

"I remember it well...wearing my very cool Earth Shoes, tie-died t-shirt and jeans, we planted a tree on my college's campus. We truly thought we could make a difference!" - Sandra Fowler-Hill, former Vice-President of Instruction

Memories of Earth Day celebrations at EvCC

"I remember in the early '90s, I believe. Dana Graupmann started the first environmental student club called Environment Watch. The group encouraged recycling (the college didn't recycle at that time, but started after that as a result of their 'nagging'). They celebrated Earth Day and I think they gave away tree starts. Oh, my, it was quite some time ago!" - Laura Hedges, former Women’s Services, Manager, Diversity and Equity Center

"Yes, I recall those early '90s Earth Day efforts on campus - especially the trees (several of them are growing wonderfully at my former home in Stanwood). I was proud of how the United Native American Council (UNAC), which is now called the 1st Nations Club, joined forces with Dana and the new Environmental club to co-sponsor programs to help promote better care of Mother Earth, a core guiding principle of indigenous peoples." - Earl Martin, Advisor, Counseling & Student Success
