Update: July 2, 8:30 a.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,

Washington state just released new COVID-19 higher education guidelines, and that means that our plans for Fall quarter at EvCC are changing.

Under the proclamation, all colleges and universities are required to collect information about students’ vaccine status. At this point, our understanding is that this requirement starts Fall quarter. We are working hard to determine how we are going to collect this information.

Since we have to gather vaccine status information anyway, it makes sense for EvCC to become a vaccinated campus starting Fall quarter and enjoy the benefit of being exempt from some state requirements, such as social distancing.

You probably have a lot of questions about what being a vaccinated campus means and how that will work at EvCC. I need to ask for your patience as we figure out the details, but I can tell you that exemptions will be allowed.

I will share more information with you as soon as possible. We hope to have a frequently asked questions guide from the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges to send out soon too.

For Summer quarter at EvCC, everyone needs to wear a mask, even if you’re vaccinated, and 3 feet of social distancing is required. All students, faculty, staff, and visitors must fill out the Trojan Safety Check-In form before every visit to EvCC this Summer.

I am excited for the start of Summer quarter on Tuesday and to welcome more students back to campus this Fall.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria Willis
EvCC President

Update: June 16, 11:15 a.m.

Dear Students,
I am very excited to welcome more students back to campus in July! From in-person to online classes, you have a range of options for your education this Summer and Fall.

As more students and employees return, I have some updated information to share with you about vaccination, masks, and social distancing.

  • Vaccination: I strongly encourage students, faculty and staff to get vaccinated. For programs that currently require other vaccines, the COVID-19 vaccination may be required. We are looking into requiring vaccination for student housing. For other work and learning on campus, vaccination is not required.

This was a tough decision, but we do not have the systems in place to track student and employee vaccination status and ensure privacy of this health information. In the absence of that, this is the safest and best choice. After we transition to a new centralized technology system called ctcLink, the college may revisit this question for Winter quarter.

If you have not been vaccinated yet, please join us this Saturday, June 19 for our next vaccination clinic at EvCC's Walt Price Student Fitness Center. The clinic is being offered through President Biden’s vaccine partnership.

  • Masks: Without a vaccine requirement, the state requires that everyone at EvCC locations wear a mask even if you are fully vaccinated.

For employees seeking a disability-related accommodation, employees may contact Human Resources at hr@everettcc.edu.

For students seeking a disability-related accommodation, contact the Center for Disability Services at cds@everettcc.edu.

  • Social Distancing: Without a vaccine requirement, the state requires 3 feet of social distancing, unless a program exception has been approved by EvCC’s Incident Response Team.

  • Trojan Safety Check-In Form: All students, faculty and staff are required to submit the Trojan Safety Check-In form before every visit to EvCC physical locations.

Return to Campus

We are reopening our physical locations in phases. We’ll have more information about what will be available for students in each phase soon.

Many student services offices will offer in-person services 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays during the Summer starting on July 8. Watch individual webpages for hours and information. Help will also still be available via phone, email, and text message!

Summer Hours

EvCC will begin its Summer schedule on June 21. Many offices will be closed on Fridays through Sept. 10.

Some offices will also be closed for services Wednesday afternoons this Summer to allow employees to prepare for ctcLink. See this webpage for a list of offices that will be affected this Summer.

Navigating a global health crisis has been challenging for all of us. We have all been through so much together, for which I am most grateful for your perseverance through these challenging times.

Thank you for your patience as we do our best to keep up with the changes to federal, state, and local guidance. When the guidance changes - and it will - we will let you know what that means for EvCC as soon as possible.

We look forward to seeing you back on our beautiful campus.

Sincerely,
Daria J. Willis, Ph.D.
EvCC President

Summer/Fall Update: May 6, 8:30 a.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,
The sunshine outside is a welcome sign that Spring is finally here! Summer is just around the corner, which means it is time for an update about Everett Community College’s Summer and Fall classes.

Summer and Fall Classes

Back in January, we announced plans to bring more Trojans back to campus. That will begin this Summer! For Summer and Fall, we will be offering more opportunities to learn in-person in hybrid classes.

EvCC will offer four types of classes:

  • Fully face-to-face: A small number of classes will be delivered fully in person with safety precautions in the Fall.
  • Hybrid: In-person classes with safety precautions and online coursework.
  • Livestream: A portion of the online content is delivered via live-streaming. Students will attend remotely during scheduled live-streaming sessions as indicated in the class schedule. No on-campus classes or labs.
  • Online: All online with no on-campus classes or labs. You are not required to login at specific times unless requested by your instructor. You do need to meet assignment deadlines. Login to Canvas on the first day of your class.

The Summer and preliminary Fall class schedules will be available online on May 15. For information about how specific classes are being offered, please see the class schedule webpage on May 15.

Registration starts May 24-27 for current students for Summer and Fall quarter. Check your Registration Access time and date through the CTC Student Kiosk. You can see your Access Date on the CTC Student Kiosk one week before registration begins.

The Fall schedule is preliminary; we may add additional face-to-face or hybrid classes for Fall when the final Fall class schedule is available in late July.

Services for Students

Like we have in previous years, EvCC will change its Summer operating hours to 10 hours per day Monday through Thursday (the college will be closed Fridays) starting June 21 and ending Sept. 10.

EvCC will continue to support students via video chat, text message, phone, and email. Some offices will offer in-person meetings via appointment (see offices’ webpages for details), but this Summer, drop-in services will only be available online.

EvCC’s Early Learning Center is planning to reopen for Summer quarter on July 6. The ELC will offer half-day child care/preschool for 30-40 children. The child care/preschool will be held primarily outside. For more information, visit the ELC webpage.

Student, Faculty, and Staff Safety

EvCC’s Campus Reopening Committee has been working on plans for Summer and Fall. Although we hope many of our students and staff will opt to get vaccinated prior to the start of Summer quarter in July, we will still need to take safety precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Those precautions include smaller class sizes, social distancing on campus, and wearing a mask. I also strongly encourage you to get a COVID-19 vaccine, if you are able to. Doing our part to reduce the spread of COVID-19 is crucial for the return to in-person learning.

More details to come soon.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
Everett Community College President

Update: May 14, 4:45 p.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,
By now, most of you have heard the news: the CDC mask recommendations have changed for fully vaccinated people, and Washington state will follow the CDC recommendations.

This change is only for folks who are more than two weeks out after receiving their second shot of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, or two weeks out after receiving their one dose of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. I am looking forward to reaching that milestone in June!

What does this mean for EvCC’s students, faculty, and staff?
Gov. Inslee’s announcement yesterday noted that masks are still required at schools, but we do not know yet if that requirement includes higher education.

We are waiting for guidance from the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges to learn how the change impacts mask requirements at colleges and universities.

Until we know more, we will not be changing our mask requirements at EvCC. You must wear a mask at all EvCC locations.

Just a reminder - EvCC staff are here to help via phone, email, video chat and text message. Offices are not open for in-person service yet.

I will let you know when we receive additional information!

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria Willis
Everett Community College President

Fall Quarter 2021 at EvCC

Dear Trojan Nation,
A year ago, Everett Community College became the first college in the nation to confront COVID-19, with the first case in the United States diagnosed at a hospital just three blocks from EvCC’s main campus.

We worked together, like Trojans do, to make a plan to protect students, faculty, and staff. Since then, we’ve updated that plan over 100 times as we learned more about the virus and worked closely with the heroes at the Snohomish Health District.

It’s time to make a new plan. This Fall quarter, EvCC expects to bring more Trojans back to campus.

You probably have a lot of questions about how returning to campus will work, and we do not have all of the answers yet. I will be working with EvCC leadership, faculty, and staff to determine the details, and I will keep you posted about major developments.

Just like before COVID-19, students this Fall will have a range of options for their education, including online and hybrid classes. Information about individual classes will be in the college’s Fall class schedule, which will be available online on May 15.

For Spring quarter, classes will remain mostly online. Watch for the Spring class schedule online on Feb. 12.

Although we are planning for more in-person classes this Fall, it is possible this will change if the pandemic worsens. We have a long way to go before we beat COVID-19. We are monitoring key community health indicators and following all state and local COVID-19 guidance. The health and safety of EvCC students, faculty, and staff remains our priority.

You can help us bring more classes back to campus by wearing your mask, washing your hands, avoiding crowds, and staying home if you are ill.

A year ago, we faced an uncertain future. I knew, though, I could count on the mighty Trojans to endure, and we have. Let’s make every effort to see each other in person in time for Fall quarter.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
Everett Community College President

The student’s team has been notified and practice has been suspended.

We send our best wishes for a quick and complete recovery to this member of our Trojan family.

EvCC Spring Quarter 2021

Dear Trojan Nation,
After reviewing Snohomish Health District COVID-19 data, Washington state’s COVID vaccine tiers, and Gov. Jay Inslee’s new Healthy Washington roadmap, Everett Community College will continue offering most of our classes online Spring quarter.

I had hoped that we would be able to offer more in-person classes, but case counts are increasing, not decreasing, and widespread vaccination is not likely before Spring quarter starts on April 5. Currently, the Puget Sound region, which includes Snohomish County, is only in Phase 1 of the governor’s Healthy Washington roadmap.

This was a tough call. I want to be back on campus, and I know many of you do too.

For Spring quarter, EvCC will offer three types of classes:

  • Livestream: A portion of the online content is delivered via live-streaming. Students will attend remotely during scheduled live-streaming sessions as indicated in the class schedule. No on-campus classes or labs. Look for the LS symbol in the class schedule.
  • Online: All online with no on-campus classes or labs. You are not required to login at specific times unless requested by your instructor. You do need to meet assignment deadlines. Login to Canvas on the first day of your class. Look for the computer symbol in the class schedule.
  • Hybrid: Online lectures and in-person labs using social distancing. Look for the H symbol in the class schedule.

The college’s Incident Response Team extensively reviews the safety plans for all in-person instruction and works with EvCC employees to ensure that we follow all guidelines for the safety of students, faculty, and staff.

Although we are not together in person, EvCC faculty and staff are here to support you. We are so proud of you for continuing your education under the most challenging circumstances I’ve seen in my lifetime. Every class you attend and homework assignment you finish puts you one step closer to achieving your dream.

Please keep doing your part to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by wearing a mask, staying at least six feet away from people who don’t live with you, and avoiding crowds.

Take care of yourselves and each other.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
Everett Community College President

Update: February 4, 1:30 p.m.

An Everett Community College Bookstore employee has tested positive for COVID-19. The employee was last on campus on Monday.

The employee wore personal protective equipment at all times at the Bookstore, and the Bookstore is cleaned at least twice per day. The employee primarily worked in the stockroom and in areas closed to the public, not in the customer area of the store.

Because of those precautions, the Bookstore will remain open for in-person purchases 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Note: Students in line after 1:30 p.m. are not guaranteed admittance the same day.

Update: January 20, 7 p.m.

A student at Everett Community College Advanced Manufacturing Training & Education Center (AMTEC) has tested positive for COVID-19. The student was last on campus on Jan. 12.

Because the student wore personal protective equipment at all times at AMTEC, it has been eight days since the student was last on campus, and nightly cleaning of the facility occurred, AMTEC classes will continue as scheduled.

Our best wishes for the student’s quick and complete recovery.

Update: Dec. 19 - Drive-Thru COVID-19 Testing Starts Monday at EvCC

To meet the increasing need for COVID-19 testing, the Snohomish Health District will open its second drive-thru test site at Everett Community College starting on Monday, November 23.

The Everett Community College testing site is located at 915 N. Broadway in the parking lot immediately south of WSU Everett building. Testing will be available at this location five days a week starting in December.

All testing is offered 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., by appointment only. Registration is now open for appointments through the end of November. All information can be accessed at www.snohd.org/testing. Health District testing sites will be closed on November 26 and 27 for Thanksgiving.

Those without internet access or needing language assistance can reach the Health District’s call center at 425-339-5278. The call center is staffed 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Callers after hours or on weekends can leave a message, which will be returned on the next business day.

Testing is open to anyone, regardless of symptoms, but remains strongly encouraged for individuals that fit the following criteria:

  • Anyone with any of the following COVID-19 symptoms (fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headaches, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea); or
  • Close contact of a confirmed case; or
  • Anyone who lives or works in a congregate setting; or
  • Work in healthcare, EMS, law enforcement or other fields where work settings have a higher risk of catching or spreading COVID-19; or
  • Part of a family or social network that has had a case.

Update: November 19, 8:15 a.m.

Additional EvCC Safety Protocols in Effect Until Jan. 2

Dear Trojan Nation,
EvCC leaders have carefully reviewed the new statewide restrictions that began yesterday and guidance provided by the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges.

Based on that information, we have decided to adopt some additional EvCC safety protocols. We will follow these protocols through January 2, 2021.

Here are the highlights. You can read the full version here.

  1. Classes and Labs: All classes will continue to be conducted online, except for in-person labs for approved professional technical programs. Those labs will continue to follow strict safety protocols. EvCC deans will work with faculty to transition as much professional-technical training online as possible.
  2. Cosmetology: Cosmetology’s salon is closed to the public. Cosmetology labs will continue.
  3. Student Services: Continue online services to the greatest extent possible.
  4. Athletics: All athletics practices are canceled, effective Nov. 20. No athletic activities are allowed, and the Walt Price Student Fitness Center, including the weight room, is closed.
  5. Limit on-campus access: Employees should continue to work remotely as much as possible, including those who are approved to come to campus.
  6. Student Housing: Residents may not have visitors (including fellow residents) in their rooms at any time. Current residents are also being advised about the governor’s travel advisory for out-of-state travel and asked to notify housing if they travel outside of Washington state.
  7. Travel Advisory: EvCC is recommending following the governor’s travel advisory, including a 14-day quarantine for interstate and international travel to slow the spread of the virus.

In addition to these steps, I am excited to partner with the Snohomish Health District to offer drive-thru COVID-19 testing in a parking lot on the east part of EvCC’s campus (south of the WSU building).<

Access to testing is an important part of the strategy to reduce the spread of the virus. Testing will begin there Nov. 23 and continue through Dec. 31. Please check the Health District webpage for information about how to make an appointment for a test there closer to Dec. 2.

For your safety and the safety of your loved ones, please stay home as much as you can, including this Thanksgiving. The better we do now, the faster we’re back at the table with everyone we care about.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
EvCC President

Update: November 17, 3:30 p.m.

A student at Everett Community College Aviation Maintenance Technology building has tested positive for COVID-19. The student was last on campus on Nov. 6.

The student reported first experiencing COVID-19 symptoms on Nov. 11.

The Aviation Maintenance Technology buildings have been cleaned multiple times since then. Because the student’s symptoms did not begin until Nov. 11, all labs at the Aviation Maintenance Technology buildings will continue as scheduled. Labs at other EvCC locations will also be held as scheduled.

The student did not attend classes or use services at any other EvCC locations, including main campus.

We wish the student all the best for a quick and complete recovery.

Update November 15, 6:15 p.m.

An Everett Community College welding employee at the college’s Advanced Manufacturing Training & Education Center (AMTEC) has tested positive for COVID-19. The employee was last on campus on Nov. 9.

All welding classes at AMTEC will be online only until further notice. No in-person welding labs will be held. Prior to resuming in-person labs, EvCC will deep clean.

Because welding booths are separate from other parts of instruction, all other AMTEC labs will meet as scheduled. Labs at other EvCC locations will also be held as scheduled.

We wish this employee all the best and a quick and complete recovery.

Update: November 15, 1 p.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,
As you have probably heard, Washington state is imposing restrictions to stop the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in our state.

What do the restrictions mean for EvCC?

Higher education is exempt from the new restrictions, which means that if you have a lab on Monday and you do not have any COVID-19 symptoms, you should attend. If you are scheduled to work on campus on Monday and are healthy, please come to work.

We are continuing to follow the strict safety protocols under the Washington state Campus Reopening Guide and our college safety plan. We will also review the statewide restrictions this week. If the college’s Incident Response Team and I determine there’s a need for additional steps at EvCC, we will let you know.

The restrictions announced today by Gov. Jay Inslee are necessary to slow a surge in COVID-19 cases. In Snohomish County, we have 188 cases per 100,000 people - far worse than the peak of infection in March. On Friday, the Snohomish Health District reported that 289 people tested positive in a single day.

According to the Snohomish Health District, the recent spike in cases suggests the beginning of a surge in demand for hospital care that may become overwhelming—and will become overwhelming unless Snohomish County residents change course immediately.

Dr. Chris Spitters, the health officer for Snohomish County, shared these urgent requests this week:

  • Holding gatherings is a threat to all. Stop it. Plain and simple, just stop.
  • Reduce socializing and other non-essential activity. If it’s not for work, school or medical purposes, the safest bet is to skip it. Don’t attend gatherings. Period.
  • Avoid contact with people and businesses who don’t follow the guidance.

We will get through this. We can make these sacrifices to save lives and take care of each other.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
EvCC President

Update: November 13, 3:30 p.m.

An Everett Community College student athlete who has attended in-person practices reported testing positive today for COVID-19.

The student last attended practice off campus on Nov. 9 and had not been in any EvCC buildings in the past 14 days. During practice, team members wore masks and used social distancing.

The student’s team has been notified and practice has been suspended.

We send our best wishes for a quick and complete recovery to this member of our Trojan family.

Update: November 12, 8:30 a.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,
As COVID-19 cases increase locally and nationally, EvCC is improving how the college assesses virus transmission risk when a student or employee tests positive.

See our new EvCC COVID-19 Exposure Risk Assessment tool.

Starting today, every confirmed case of COVID-19 will be assessed to determine the risk of exposure to others on campus. EvCC’s COVID-19 Incident Response Team, which I formed after the very first days of the virus, will work together to review these factors and determine how each impacts overall exposure risk.

You will notice some changes from EvCC’s current COVID-19 process.

When an employee, student, or visitor who has been on campus in the last 14 days is diagnosed with COVID-19, that information will continue to be posted on this webpage.

For cases that the Incident Response Team decides are low risk, you will only receive an email if we have reason to believe that you have had close contact with the person who tested positive. Same for social media. We will post there if we have a high-risk case, but we will not post about every case.

EvCC will also continue to respect the privacy of our students, employees, and visitors. We cannot release names or other identifying details.

If you test positive for COVID-19, please notify your instructors or supervisor and email evcchealth@everettcc.edu. We use that information to prevent the spread of the virus, provide support to those who have tested positive, and to alert Facilities that additional cleaning may be needed.

The original version of the Risk Assessment tool was developed by our friends at South Puget Sound Community College, who graciously gave their permission to develop a similar tool for EvCC. We appreciate their willingness to share a tool that has worked well for them.

The Snohomish Health District has seen three record-setting days of new confirmed cases received in a single day.

It’s not always easy to keep up with the good habits like masking, distancing and not gathering in-person to socialize. But please hang in there. We can turn this around.

Think about how you can modify your plans this fall and winter to keep yourself and others healthy. Even if you are with or one or two trusted friends or family members, mask up if they aren’t people you live with. If you choose to meet in person, do so outside, keep your distance and leave your masks on. In public places like businesses, wear your mask consistently and properly – that means it fits over the mouth AND nose.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
EvCC President

Update: November 5, 6 p.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,

An Everett Community College student athlete who has attended in-person practices reported testing positive today for COVID-19.

The student last attended practice on Nov. 3 and had not been in any EvCC buildings in the past 14 days.

The student’s team and workout group have been notified and practice has been suspended.

Please join me in sending our best wishes for a quick and complete recovery to this member of our Trojan family.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis

Update: October 26, 10:45 a.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,
Everett Community College has learned that two custodial employees have tested positive for COVID-19.

The custodial staff members were last on campus on Oct. 8 and on Oct. 23. Both wore masks.

The employee who was last on campus on Oct. 23 cleaned the Washington State University Everett building, which is closed today for deep cleaning. The WSU Everett building is located on EvCC’s campus and is cleaned by EvCC custodial staff.

We are monitoring this situation closely. EvCC contacts the Snohomish Health District for every student and employee who tests positive for COVID-19 who has been at an EvCC site in the last 14 days and will do so in these cases.

In-person labs at EvCC buildings will be held as scheduled. In-person labs for Mechatronics and Robotics classes resume this week at the Advanced Manufacturing Training & Education Center (AMTEC).

These employees are in our thoughts and we hope for a quick recovery.

As the most recent numbers show, COVID-19 cases in Snohomish Health District have significantly increased in the past few weeks. The infection rate per 100,000 people is 101. The goal is less than 25 per 100,000.

Snohomish County has flattened the COVID curve before, and we can do it again. It is essential that everyone is consistently:

  • Wearing a mask, even with people you see regularly and in your smallest social circles and anytime you are using shared transportation, including while in your own vehicle with other people.
  • Keeping gatherings small and holding them outside whenever possible.
  • Avoiding any social gatherings indoors, but if you must participate, wearing a mask and ensuring windows and doors are open to maximize ventilation.
  • Washing or sanitizing hands often and not touching your face.
  • Staying home if you’re sick or if you’ve been exposed to COVID-19.

Please do your part to keep our community safe and healthy!

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
Everett Community College President

Update: October 16, 6 p.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,
Everett Community College learned this afternoon that a custodial employee has reported a positive test for COVID-19. The employee was last at work on Thursday, Oct. 8.

During night shifts on Oct. 5 to Oct. 8, the employee cleaned restrooms in the Parks Student Union, Rainier Hall, and Olympus Hall. The employee wore a mask during that time.

Since the employee’s last day on campus, the restrooms have been cleaned by other custodial employees five times.

No classes are being held in Parks, Rainier, or Olympus at this time. EvCC’s Bookstore, located in the Parks Student Union, has been open limited hours.

In-person labs at EvCC buildings, except for mechatronics and robotics classes at AMTEC, will be held as scheduled next week. In-person labs for Avionics classes resume on Monday at EvCC’s Aviation Maintenance Technology building at Paine Field.

We send our best wishes for this employee’s quick and complete recovery.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
Everett Community College President

Update: October 13, 9:40 a.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,
Everett Community College learned this morning that a student in mechatronics labs at the college’s Advanced Manufacturing Training & Education Center (AMTEC) has reported a positive test for COVID-19.

All mechatronics classes at AMTEC will be online only until further notice. No in-person mechatronics labs will be held. Prior to resuming in-person labs, EvCC will deep clean.

Because mechatronics labs were held in a separate part of AMTEC from other classes, all other AMTEC labs will meet as scheduled.

The student last attended lab on Oct. 7.The student only attended labs at AMTEC. The student did not visit any other EvCC buildings on main campus. Students and employees at AMTEC are being notified and advised to monitor their health.

Labs at other main campus buildings and Cosmetology will be held as scheduled. All classes at Aviation Maintenance Technology will continue online until further notice due a student who reported a positive COVID-19 on Oct. 6.

Please join me in sending our best wishes for a quick and complete recovery to this member of our Trojan family.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
Everett Community College President

An Everett Community College avionics student taking classes at Aviation Maintenance Technology at Paine Field in south Everett has reported a positive test for COVID-19.

All classes at the Aviation Maintenance Technology buildings will be online only until further notice. No in-person labs will be held, and staff will work remotely. Prior to resuming in-person classes, EvCC will deep clean.

The student last attended class on Thursday, Oct. 1.The student did not attend classes or use services at any other EvCC locations, including main campus. Students in all classes and employees at the Aviation Maintenance Technology building are being notified and advised to monitor their health.

Labs at main campus and Cosmetology will be held as scheduled.

Our hearts go out to this member of our Trojan family. Please join me in sending our best wishes for a quick and complete recovery.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
EvCC President

Update: August 10, 8 a.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,
As we enjoy some beautiful sunshine, Winter quarter seems a long time away.

But we know that students and employees want to make plans for the future. EvCC is looking ahead to January 2021 (anyone else excited to say goodbye to 2020?) to schedule Winter quarter classes.

For Winter quarter, EvCC will continue to offer three types of classes. Most classes will be online.

  • Livestream: Part of the online content is delivered via live-streaming with an instructor at specific times. No on-campus classes or labs.
  • Online: All online with no on-campus classes or labs. You are not required to login at specific times unless requested by your instructor. You do need to meet assignment deadlines.
  • Hybrid: Online lectures and in-person labs using social distancing. EvCC was the first college in our state to offer in-person nursing labs. I’m proud of our faculty and staff who are following rigorous safety protocols for our hybrid classes in health sciences, advanced manufacturing, aviation, cosmetology, and IT. Students’ online learning complements the hands-on experience they are receiving in person.

I had hoped that we would be able to return to regular in-person classes in Winter 2021, but with the high rate of COVID-19 infection in Snohomish County and the likelihood that the virus transmission will increase in the Winter, this is the safest and best choice for students, faculty, and staff. Plus, fewer trips to campus in snowy and icy weather is better for everyone.

We will have a preview of Winter quarter classes available in early September at EverettCC.edu/Classes. The final Winter schedule will be posted at the same webpage at the end of October.

If you have not registered for Fall yet, now is the time! Classes are filling up fast. Register now at EverettCC.edu/MyEvCC.

Wherever you are learning, I encourage you to stay connected to the Trojan Nation. You are not on your own. We are here for you via video chats, text messaging, phone calls, and email. Fuzzy slippers are optional.

Even though Fall quarter has not started yet, I encourage you to start thinking about what comes next. A better future is coming, and your education is an important part of that!

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
President

Update: July 15, 4 p.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,

We are relieved that the Trump administration has rescinded a unfair rule that would have required international students to transfer or leave the country if their classes were offered entirely online because of the coronavirus pandemic. The rule was arbitrary, risked public health and threatened the futures of hundreds of EvCC international students. I appreciate that Washington state was part of the legal challenge that led to the implementation of the change being stopped.

We stand for equality and access for all of our students regardless of where they were born.

The presence of international students from over 30 countries around the world at EvCC provides our local students with real educational and career benefits through their academic and social interactions. Our local students are able to obtain real-life experiences without having to leave the United States.

International students introduce diverse perspectives into classroom discussions, break stereotypes and make our college more vibrant. Local students have the opportunity to gain better-informed opinions and a deeper understanding of international issues and foreign affairs. In addition to improving inter-cultural experiences, students get to celebrate new holidays, experience different cuisines, and increase travel opportunities by visiting friends in their home countries.

Students also learn different interpersonal and communication styles, which makes them better listeners and critical thinkers. Overall, welcoming international students improves our global society, builds better informed leaders, improves understanding, and creates more peace and fewer wars.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
President

Update: July 8, 8:30 a.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,
Everett Community College welcomed its first international student in the late 1940s. Today, more than 250 international students from over 30 countries study at EvCC.

Providing opportunities for students from other countries and cultures to learn alongside local students is an important part of our college’s commitment to cultural pluralism and global readiness. The experience also prepares our students to work in an increasingly global economy.

That is why I was dismayed to hear the announcement yesterday from Immigration and Customs Enforcement that international students whose colleges move to online only this fall must leave the United States or transfer schools.

Our international students are part of the Trojan Nation. And Trojans stick together.

We will find a way to make sure all international students have a schedule that complies with ICE and the U.S. Department of Education rules.

EvCC and the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges are working to learn more about how ICE plans to implement these upcoming changes. At this time, it is unclear how these rules will be put into practice and how they will affect EvCC international students. When we learn more, we will contact international students directly.

Fall quarter

With all of the changes in Washington state, students and employees have asked me when EvCC is reopening its campus.

As much as I would love to have a traditional Fall quarter, for the health and safety of all of our students and employees, EvCC will stick with the plan to offer three types of classes this Fall. Most classes will be online. The college will also continue to serve students remotely.

Fall quarter classes:

  • Livestream: A portion of the online content is delivered via live-streaming. Students will attend remotely during scheduled live-streaming sessions as indicated in the class schedule. No on-campus classes or labs.
  • Online: All online with no on-campus classes or labs. You are not required to login at specific times unless requested by your instructor. You do need to meet assignment deadlines. Login to Canvas on the first day of your class.
  • Hybrid: Online lectures and in-person labs using social distancing for approved programs.

This is not what I want for Fall quarter, but new cases of COVID-19 continue to increase in Snohomish County (200 cases between July 3-6 alone), according to the Snohomish Health District. We are all at risk. A growing number of cases are being identified among a younger age group (age 20-40), compared to earlier in the outbreak, when most identified cases were among older adults. Even younger students may become seriously ill or spread the illness to those who are more vulnerable to complications.

Please wear your mask, wash your hands, and continue taking good care of yourself.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
President

Update: July 1, 10:30 a.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,

An Everett Community College custodial volunteer who collects recycling at EvCC’s main campus has tested positive for COVID-19 (novel coronavirus).

The volunteer was last on campus on the afternoon of June 19. Since then, all buildings, especially those with labs in them, have been cleaned seven times. All employees who may have had contact with the volunteer have been notified. All campus offices have been closed since March and students are being served remotely.

Our hearts go out to the volunteer and we hope the volunteer has a quick and complete recovery.

The volunteer completed a health screening form prior to each shift to confirm the lack of COVID-19 symptoms, including a temperature check. All volunteers and employees on campus are required to wear masks. Custodial employees, security staff, and campus volunteers also wear gloves.

The custodial volunteer program is a partnership with the Washington State Department of Social and Human Services that provides practical work experience for immigrants and refugees receiving state assistance. The program also includes an educational component.

The volunteer program provides a major benefit to the college - a campus-wide recycling program - and is one of the many ways we’re fulfilling our commitment to equity and social justice.

I want to stress that the volunteers are part of our college community, and we will not tolerate discriminatory remarks or behavior toward any member of our college community.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
President

Update: June 8, 3 p.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,
I am very excited that Snohomish County was able to move to Phase 2 of Washington’s Safe Start plan!

This is what Phase 2 means for EvCC:

Classes

EvCC is allowed to hold some additional in-person labs. All lectures will be held online only.

We will use physical distancing in labs whenever possible, but labs and training where distancing cannot be maintained are allowed, such as learning how to draw blood in a Phlebotomy class, maintaining equipment inside an aircraft cockpit and Cosmetology. In those circumstances, we will use other virus prevention strategies.

No labs will be added for Spring quarter, except for Cosmetology, which begins in-person instruction on Wednesday, June 10.

For Summer and Fall classes, we will update the online class schedules by 8 a.m. June 11 with details about individual classes. Please check the class schedule for information about your classes.

We will continue to follow all state health and safety protocols and work closely with the Snohomish Health District. The health and safety of our students and employees remains our top priority.

As they are now, all students and employees are required to wear facial coverings unless they are working alone with no chance of interaction with other people. Also, we will continue weekly safety training and screening students and employees for COVID-19 symptoms. See more information about safety protocols on this webpage.

Student Services

EvCC will continue to serve students online. EvCC’s campus remains temporarily closed, unless you are a student on campus for class or an employee engaged in high-priority work.

Also, EvCC now has drive-in Wi-Fi available at the east end of parking lot E across from Whitehorse Hall.

Employees

We have had some essential employees working on campus, including some of our instructors.

Moving to Phase 2 allows some non-essential employees to return to in-person work on a limited basis to perform high priority tasks while following state health and safety protocols.

Employees, if you are not currently working on campus, your supervisor will notify you if you need to do any on-campus work.

What’s next?

It is extremely important we all continue to do our part in keeping ourselves and our communities healthy and safe.

Under the new rules, the state secretary of health can move the county back to an earlier phase if large outbreaks of the virus occur.

So keep washing your hands, wearing your mask, and taking care of yourself!

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
President

Update: June 2, 9:40 a.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,
When Snohomish County moves to Phase 2 of Washington’s Safe Start plan, Everett Community College will be ready.

We are continuing to plan - for next week, next quarter, and beyond.

Like you, I’m eagerly awaiting news about Snohomish County’s application for Phase 2 clearance. We hope to hear soon.

In the meantime, Snohomish County (including EvCC) continues to operate under Phase 1 precautions. That means only approved programs may offer in-person labs with social distancing. We are continuing to serve students remotely as our campus is temporarily closed to the public.

EvCC continues to require students and employees working on campus to wear facial coverings, but, per the governor, if employees are working in their office alone and not interacting with the public, they are allowed to remove their facial covering.

The college will provide cloth facial coverings to employees who are working on campus. Employees are still allowed to use their own facial coverings, and I encourage you to do so.

EvCC continues to work closely with the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, the governor’s office, and public health experts to prepare for Phase 2 for higher education.

In that phase, all labs, including science labs, could be allowed, using social distancing and other safety protocols. Lectures would remain online.

If we want to get to Phase 2, we all need to continue to do our part. Wash your hands. Wear your facial covering. Use social distancing.

We are in this together.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
President

Update: May 28, 9:10 a.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,
I am happy to share some good news with you: EvCC will be a food bank distribution site and we now have drive-in Wi-Fi access in parking lot E near Whitehorse Hall.

VOA Food Bank Distribution Site

I am proud to announce that Everett Community College will be serving as a distribution location for the Volunteers of America Everett Food Bank for the next three months.

Snohomish County families will be able to pick up food 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays from EvCC parking lot J near the Early Learning Center. Distribution starts this Wednesday, June 3.

Students and employees are also welcome to pick up boxes of food. There are no identification or documentation requirements for VOA’s food bank.

If you’d like to donate to the food bank, the best way to provide support is an online donation at voaww.org/donate.

EvCC also offers assistance to students and employees through its Food Pantry. To schedule an appointment with the Food Pantry, email FoodPantry@everettcc.edu.

Many families are facing economic challenges right now. No one should go hungry. I am glad the college can play a role in helping families get the meals they need.

Drive-in Wi-Fi

Thanks to the hard work of EvCC’s IT staff, EvCC Wi-Fi access is now available for drive-in use in in parking lot E near Whitehorse Hall at the college’s main campus in Everett.

Students, faculty, staff, and the community are able to access college Wi-Fi for free, but the college is asking people to stay in their vehicles. There is no need to wear a mask inside your car. College buildings remain closed to the public.

EvCC’s Wi-Fi expansion is part of a statewide initiative to expand digital access, which includes more than 600 drive-in Wi-Fi hotspots statewide. You can find free Wi-Fi access throughout the state on this map. (EvCC will be added to the map soon).

Access to the Internet is an equity issue, and I am pleased the college can help bridge the digital divide.

Hope to have more good news to share soon! Keep taking good care of yourself and your loved ones.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis

Update: May 8, 12 p.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,
I am extremely proud of all of the work our students, faculty, and staff have done to safely offer in-person labs for a limited number of our students.

Some EvCC labs resumed May 6, the day after the governor approved restarting essential workforce development programs. He shared guidance with the public about restarting essential workforce development programs, including health care, emergency services, advanced manufacturing and transportation.

Additional EvCC labs start Tuesday

EvCC is complying with the safety requirements identified by the governor. In addition to labs for Emergency Medical Services, Firefighter Academy, Medical Assisting, Nursing, and Phlebotomy Technician, EvCC will offer in-person labs for these programs beginning on Tuesday, May 12:

  • Advanced Manufacturing (AMTEC): Welding, Composites, Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, Precision Machining, Pre-employment (Manufacturing), and Welding/Fabrication
  • Aviation: Aviation Maintenance and Advanced Avionics

If you are enrolled in classes in any of these programs, please check with your instructor as soon as possible to get the most current information, including room number and class start and end times.

Safety is our highest priority

Employees and students will undergo temperature screening and will be asked to answer questions related to their health upon entry at AMTEC, Aviation Maintenance, and Liberty Hall.

In addition, employees and students will receive training on proper distancing, cleaning, and health monitoring on May 12  and each week throughout the quarter.

All EvCC students, employees, and visitors are required to have facial coverings at all times at EvCC buildings and locations. Please bring and use your own facial covering. If you do not have one, a limited number of facial covers will be available on site.

We are working hard to provide the training necessary for future essential employees. I am very thankful that the governor's office is allowing these educational opportunities to occur.

At this time, EvCC buildings remain closed to the public. We continue to serve students virtually. Employees who are working from home will keep doing so, unless you’ve heard otherwise from your supervisor.

Fall Quarter

For Fall quarter, EvCC will offer three types of classes. Most classes will be online.

Please check the Fall quarter class schedule with details about specific classes, which will be available online on June 2. The Summer quarter schedule will be available May 15.

We are working together, and we are making this happen. We can do this!

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
President

Update: May 5, 7:30 p.m.

Good evening,

I am happy to report that Everett Community College has been approved to resume a limited number of courses in person beginning tomorrow, May 6.

These courses are in the following programs: Emergency Medical Services, Firefighter Academy, Medical Assisting, Nursing, and Phlebotomy Technician.

Only the classes in these programs offered in Liberty Hall are resuming Wednesday, May 6. If you are enrolled in classes in any of these programs, please check with your instructor as soon as possible to get the most current information, including room number and class start and end times.

The college will follow the governor's guidelines for in-person instruction. Employees and students will undergo temperature screening and will be asked to answer questions related to their health upon entry to the building.

Be prepared to wait in line using social distancing outside of Liberty Hall's south entrance. The south entrance is the only access to the building that will be used. In addition, employees and students will receive training on proper distancing, cleaning, and health monitoring on May 6 and each week throughout the quarter.

All students and employees will be required to have facial coverings. There is a limited number of facial covers on site; however, if you have your own, please bring and use your own facial covering.

An update on other programs that may be authorized to return to on-campus instruction will be provided by May 8.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
President

Update: May 4, 4:45 p.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,
Today, Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee signed a new COVID-19 order for the phased reopening of Washington state’s economy.

What does this mean for Everett Community College?

Higher education is considered an essential service by Washington state. Limited instructional activity in lab settings is permitted, as long as safety protocols are followed. That includes hygiene, social distancing, and cleaning and sanitization.

I am meeting with EvCC vice presidents and deans to develop our college’s plan to safely allow some in-person labs for some of our professional/technical programs later this month. The safety of our students, faculty, and staff remains our highest priority. I expect to have an update for you by the end of the day on May 8.

Our campus will still be closed to the public. We will continue to serve students virtually. Employees who are working from home will keep doing so, unless you’ve heard otherwise from your supervisor.

We will also continue our plans to offer Summer quarter classes online to the greatest extent possible. Watch for the Summer class schedule, which will be available online May 15. More news about Fall quarter is coming soon.

I agree with the governor that slowly returning to public life is the safest choice. None of us want to go through this again. We are taking this slowly and carefully, and continuing to wash our hands.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
President

Update: April 28, 1:10 p.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,
We are only in the third week of Spring quarter, but I want to encourage you to start thinking about your Summer classes.

Online learning continues Summer quarter
For the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff, we have made the decision to continue most classes online in Summer quarter.

We expect to offer some labs and professional/technical training in person using strict social distancing (staying six feet away from each other).

There will be three types of classes:

  • Livestream: A portion of the online content is delivered via live-streaming. Students will attend remotely during scheduled live-streaming sessions as indicated in the class schedule. No on-campus classes or labs. Look for the LS symbol.
  • Online: All online with no on-campus classes or labs. You are not required to login at specific times unless requested by your instructor. You do need to meet assignment deadlines. Login to Canvas on the first day of your class.
  • Hybrid: Online lectures and in-person labs using social distancing. Look for the HY symbol.

I had hoped that EvCC would be able to return to offering regular in-person classes this Summer, but the safest choice is to continue offering most classes online.

The Summer class schedule will be available online on May 15. Registration for current students for Summer starts May 26. We’ll have more details about Fall quarter soon.

Also, we are awaiting guidance from the state about when we may be able to safely offer in-person labs, professional/technical training, and student services for Spring. In the meantime, EvCC will continue serving students remotely. We will do everything we can to help you succeed!

I hope that with many of you making the transition to online education for Spring, you will carry on with those skills to succeed in your classes this Summer. You have already done the hard work of figuring out how to learn at home. Now is the time to keep going to reach your goals!

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
President

Update: April 27, 10:15 a.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,
I started this year on a sunny July 1, with excitement and a lot of plans for the academic year ahead.

I’d hoped to end the year by celebrating your accomplishments at Everett Community College’s graduation ceremony.

Unfortunately, things don’t always turn out the way we plan.

After conversations with EvCC’s Graduation Committee, which includes students, faculty, and staff, I have decided to celebrate our graduates online on June 19 instead of an in-person event.

The committee shared my concerns about the safety of our graduates, their families, and EvCC employees. It was a very difficult decision.

Please see this video message from EvCC ASB President Araceli Daza and me and watch your email for more information about this year’s graduation celebration. We will also be inviting 2020 grads and their families to join us at the 2021 graduation ceremony.

However we celebrate, know that all of us at Everett Community College are extra proud of this year’s graduates for making it through a challenging year. You’ve faced a global pandemic and found a way to succeed. You did not give up.

We are proud to welcome you to the Trojan alumni family.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
President

Update: April 22, 4:10 p.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,
Have you ever been on a road trip with kids? If not, it goes something like this: “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?”

When we’re driving, we have turn-by-turn directions showing how many miles and minutes are left until our destination. For COVID-19, we are in uncharted territory. There are no turn-by-turn directions and the timeline is uncertain. We don’t know how long we’ll be dealing with the pandemic, and the milestones along the way keep changing.

As a planner, this is difficult and downright irritating because I want to make a plan. I want to know what happens next.

At Everett Community College, we are continuing to follow guidance from the Washington State Department of Health, the Snohomish Health District and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the health and safety of our students and employees. That includes complying with Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee's "Stay Home, Stay Healthy" order to slow the spread of COVID-19.

We are awaiting guidance from the state about the safe return to college classes and services, with the understanding that Gov. Inslee will restart public life slowly and carefully, like the turning of a dial instead of a flipping of a switch, and we will support this effort 100%. In the meantime, EvCC will continue to serve students remotely.

We are also preparing for a variety of scenarios for Spring, Summer, and Fall quarters. I hope we will be able to offer a limited number of in-person labs and professional/technical training using strict social distancing in May, but that will depend on science, data, and the health of our communities.

So please stay home, take good care of yourself, wash your hands, and do an amazing job with your Spring classes! When we get to the next turn on this journey, I will let you know!

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
President

Update: April 16, 4:30 p.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,

As our community works to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak, I’ve found comfort in the many ways we’re helping each other.

I want to let you know about a new option available for current EvCC students who have experienced financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You may qualify for a federal CARES Act grant, which provides emergency funding for college students.

You can apply for what you need, up to a maximum of $750 each quarter for Spring 2020, Summer 2020, Fall 2020, and Winter 2021. Please submit the online application here.

Funds can be used for food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, tuition, fees, or child care.

EvCC is working quickly to review requests. Your application will be reviewed within two business days from submission. Funds will be awarded on a case-by-case basis.

There are other resources that may be able to help, too.

We are still taking Spring quarter financial aid applications and are fast tracking them to get an answer ASAP! Please apply now following the directions listed here.

If you need to request more financial aid because your circumstances have changed, EvCC is one of the first community colleges in the nation to participate in SwiftStudent, a free digital resource to help students request changes to their college financial aid.

If you need food, please contact the EvCC Food Pantry at FoodPantry@everettcc.edu to make an appointment.

You can also get help applying for state food, cash and medical benefits, or get resource referrals for community resources (including financial, nutritional and educational resources, among others) by contacting klindstrom@everettcc.edu or 425-388-9989 (please leave a message; you will receive a call back).

Also, the EvCC Foundation may be able to help. Email foundation@everettcc.edu.

Later this month, we expect to have more Chromebooks available to rent for free. We’ll share more info as soon as they arrive.

Most importantly, our faculty and staff are ready to help you succeed during Spring quarter. This is a quarter none of us will ever forget, and we want you to look back with pride on everything you’ve accomplished.

I hope you had a great first week! Stay well, and we are here to support you!

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
President

Update April 3, 5:10 p.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,
Right now, May 4 seems like a really long time away.

When I heard Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee had extended the Stay Home, Stay Healthy emergency order until May 4, I was disappointed.

The past two weeks have been hard. What am I going to do at home for another four weeks?

But I know that the governor’s stay-at-home order is the right decision for our state and is definitely necessary to flatten the curve. Our state is seeing evidence that we’re reducing the spread of COVID-19. Our efforts today are for the greater good of tomorrow. I know you stand committed to do our part to stay healthy, save lives, and to reserve crucial health care resources for those fighting this battle on the front lines.

EvCC is following the governor’s order by continuing to serve our college community remotely through May 4. This means that our physical locations will remain closed to the public (including students) and we anticipate reopening the physical campus after this date.

You can still connect with EvCC by phone, email, and for some offices, video chat. See a list of Online Student Support and Resources here.

We are here to support you getting ready for Spring quarter to start April 13. If you haven’t registered for your Spring classes yet, sign up now! If you need a computer for your classes, you can request a Chromebook here.

Employees, please watch your email for detailed instructions about accessing campus. We are continuing strict social distancing and limiting access as much as possible. For most of you, that means you need to continue to work remotely. If you have questions, please check with your supervisor.

Please stay home, stay healthy, take care of yourselves, wash your hands, and May the 4th be with you!

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
Everett Community College President

Update March 31, 11:30 a.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,
This morning, we learned an Everett Community College employee has tested positive for COVID-19 (novel coronavirus).

The employee and employee’s doctor believe the exposure to COVID-19 occurred on March 19, when the employee was in close contact with a person who tested positive for COVID-19. That was after the employee was last on campus on March 18. That employee’s area was also closed to the public starting March 17. The employee has been in isolation since March 19.

Due to federal healthcare laws, we cannot share the name of the employee. Our hearts go out to the employee, and we are hoping for a quick and complete recovery.

Out of an abundance of caution, the employee has notified other employees in that individual’s department, per the Snohomish Health District’s guidance on March 20 for patients to share that information themselves.

The employee did not have any contact with students on March 17 and 18 because that area of the college was closed to the public. If you have any questions, please contact evcchealth@everettcc.edu.

EvCC continues to work closely with local and state public health officials and follow guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Washington State Department of Health, and the Snohomish Health District.

We will continue to provide updates to guide students, faculty, and staff, while working to ensure the health and safety of our community on this webpage.

We are sending virtual hugs to our employee and the employee’s loved ones during this challenging time.

Please stay home, stay healthy, take care of yourselves, and wash your hands.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
Everett Community College President

Update: March 23, 8 p.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,

Tonight, Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee shared that more than 2,000 people in Washington state have been diagnosed with COVID-19 (novel coronavirus). Many more are likely to be infected.

As a result, Gov. Inslee has issued a stay home, stay healthy order for at least the next two weeks to save lives. Starting Wednesday, most businesses will be closed statewide, similar to the order issued by Everett Mayor Cassie Franklin that took effect today.

I agree with the governor and the mayor that we are in a race against time. Social distancing is the key weapon in fighting this virus. All of us can do our part to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by staying at home.

What does this mean for EvCC employees?

Earlier this month, I announced EvCC’s liberal telecommuting policy for employees, encouraging as many employees as possible to work from home.

It is now time for almost all employees to work remotely and serve students virtually. I appreciate your flexibility and creativity in finding ways to meet our students’ needs, such as through the resources listed here: EverettCC.edu/SpringOnline. Although we are working off campus, EvCC is open.

EvCC buildings are closed to the public, and employees will have limited access to campus. I will approve any exceptions.

We will have more clarity in the next 24 hours about who will need to work on campus, who will need to have access to campus, and who will be entirely telecommuting. Please exercise patience as we work through these significant changes.

What does this mean for EvCC students?

The only students allowed on campus are residents of EvCC’s student housing and those who are picking up food assistance by appointment through the EvCC Food Pantry or Early Learning Center. If you need food assistance, please contact the Food Pantry at foodpantry@everettcc.edu. We will also continue distributing food to families of the Early Learning Center on Mondays and Thursdays.

If you are able to do so, I ask you to please make a donation to the Food Pantry online via the EvCC Foundation. Go to EverettCC.edu/Foundation and note that your donation is for the Food Pantry. Additional assistance is available statewide at Coronavirus.wa.gov.

We will continue to provide you with updates as we learn more from the state, including what the governor’s order will mean for in-person classes.

We will get through this unprecedented time stronger than before. Take care of yourself and each other.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis

Update: March 19, 1:15 p.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,
With Spring quarter starting on April 13, I had hoped that Everett Community College would be able to return to our regular class schedule, including in-person classes, at the end of April.

For the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff, we are moving all classes for Spring quarter online to the greatest extent possible for the entire quarter. Some classes will continue in person, using social distancing (staying six feet away from other people). We are updating EvCC’s Spring class schedule with details about classes and we expect that information to be available by 5 p.m. on Friday.

This was a difficult decision. I know that for students who would prefer to learn in a classroom, this is not an ideal solution.

To make it a little easier, the college will have Chromebooks available for checkout for the quarter for students who do not have a computer at home starting April 6. We are trying to get as many laptops as we can, but there will be a limited number available. More details coming soon.

EvCC’s library also has some wifi hotspots for checkout for students without Internet access at home. Additionally, Comcast is providing free internet access for 60 days to low-income families, free internet at Xfinity hotspots, and suspending their data plan rules.

The college will also continue to offer online student support services, including tutoring. We will do everything we can to help you succeed. I hope that online learning provides the additional benefit of strengthening your technology skills and preparing for a workforce that is increasingly connected virtually.

When I was a faculty member, I looked forward to the start of every quarter. I loved seeing students learn and share ideas in my classroom. But I would not trade any of those moments for your health or the health of other people in our community.

Most importantly, I want to encourage you to continue your education. We will make it through this, and you will be better prepared for your future with a degree or certificate.

I wish all of you luck with your finals and a great Spring Break.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
President, Everett Community College

Update: March 16, 5:10 p.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,
As Washington state accelerates its response to COVID-19 and Gov. Jay Inslee urges all of us to make additional changes to prevent the spread of the virus, I am asking EvCC Trojans to do our part.

With the closure of bars, restaurants, gyms, and recreational facilities statewide announced today, as well as President Donald Trump’s guidance that gatherings be limited to 10 people, we are looking for additional ways to support public health:

  • Starting Tuesday, March 17, Everett Community College will serve students and the community remotely through April 3. All EvCC locations, offices, computer labs, and buildings are closed to the public. The college will reopen for in-person services on Monday, April 6, pending further notice.
  • Please use student services available online or via phone. If you cannot access online resources and must meet with an employee for in-person assistance, an appointment is required. Please see the Student Services webpage for contact information for individual offices. EvCC's main phone line is 425-388-9100.
  • The EvCC Food Pantry is open by appointment. For assistance, call 425-388-9561 or email foodpantry@everettcc.edu.
  • Please check the Student Services webpage for further instructions about how to receive support services online or via phone.
  • EvCC’s student housing remains open to residents, but guests are not allowed.
  • Aviation maintenance, AMTEC, nursing, EMS, and other classes that require in-person work will be allowed to finish their training with strict social distancing required.
  • We are directing employees to telecommute to the greatest extent possible. Employees, please work with your supervisors. We are continuing to use social distancing for the few employees who are on campus.

These are extreme measures, but they are needed. The safety and wellbeing of our students, faculty, and staff is our highest priority.

Please continue to share factual information about the coronavirus and join me in speaking out against bias, stigmatization and harassment of any individuals or families from particular groups.

Today, Gov. Inslee said, “If we are living a normal life, we are not doing our jobs as Washingtonians. We cannot do that anymore. We need to make changes, regardless of size. All of us need to do more. We must limit the number of people we come in contact with. This is the new normal.”

We will continue to support you during this new normal. Be kind to each other, wash your hands, and stay up-to-date on this webpage.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
President, Everett Community College

Update: March 13, 2020, 2:45 p.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,

Over these last few weeks, we’ve faced significant changes sparked by COVID-19 (novel coronavirus). As you think about Spring quarter, be assured that EvCC continues to put your health, well-being and success first.

Per Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee’s restrictions for colleges and universities announced today, EvCC will:

  • Delay the start of Spring quarter classes by one week. The new start date is April 13. The 10-week quarter will end June 18. There will be no finals week.
  • During the week of April 13, EvCC classes will be online to the greatest extent possible. Instruction that must be held in person, such as aviation maintenance, labs, and nursing clinicals, will use social distancing (people will avoid being within 6 feet of each other for longer than momentary or minimal contact). If you have questions about your class, please contact your instructor March 16-20 or April 6-10.
  • Starting April 27, classes are scheduled to return to their regular modes and times of delivery as identified in EvCC’s Spring class schedule, including in-person classes.
  • EvCC’s Early Learning Center, which closed on March 13, will remain closed until April 27.
  • EvCC’s Fitness Center will be closed until April 27.
  • EvCC’s Student Housing will remain open.
  • I encourage you to use EvCC student services available online. If you cannot use those services, limited staff will be available on campus for critical student support functions. Please check the Student Services webpage for hours.

I want to encourage you not to give up on your educational goals. Registration for Spring quarter is open!

Below, I’ve included some information to help you get registered for Spring quarter classes. We’ll be with you every step of the way.

To make things a little easier, we’ve extended the tuition deadline to March 30. If you sign up for classes after March 30, tuition is due in five business days or by April 10, whichever comes first. You can also set up a payment plan.

Please continue to share factual information about the coronavirus and join me in speaking out against bias, stigmatization and harassment of any individuals or families from particular groups.

Over the college's 78 years there have been some tough times, but our students have a history of fighting for their education and coming out on top. This is exactly what happened when the college almost closed in 1941. But thanks to our students, we're here and still going strong.

I'm confident Everett Community College and its students, faculty, and staff will rise to face this challenge, too. After all, that's what Trojans do.

Be kind to each other and wash your hands.

Sincerely,

Dr. Daria Willis
President, Everett Community College

Posted: March 12, 2020, 12:35 p.m.

Dear Trojan Nation,

Late this morning, I spoke with the Snohomish Health District about a second member of the Everett Community College community who tested positive for COVID-19 (novel coronavirus).

That person was last on campus on Feb. 27. The Snohomish Health District will notify anyone who was in close contact (within six feet for a prolonged period of time) with that individual.

After consulting with the Snohomish Health District, and because it has been 13 days since that individual was last on campus (and that visit occurred prior to EvCC’s closure for deep cleaning March 5-8), all of our locations remain open with most instruction remaining online. Our custodial team will continue cleaning and frequently disinfecting frequent touchpoints.

One exception is the college’s Early Learning Center. I notified families last night (prior to learning about the second individual) that the ELC is closing effective March 13, 2020 until April 6, 2020 or until circumstances improve. I decided to close the ELC because it is impossible to implement social distancing (remaining six feet away from other people) with young children.

Social distancing is one of the key strategies recommended by the Washington State Department of Health to prevent the spread of the virus. EvCC is implementing that strategy by moving most of our Winter quarter classes online. For those classes that cannot meet online as well as college services at EvCC locations, we are using social distancing.

EvCC is working closely with local and state public health officials and following guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Snohomish Health District to align our plans with the most current recommendations from experts. This includes encouraging everyone to monitor their own health, practice good hygiene, and stay home if feeling sick.

Sharing accurate information is crucial in our fight against COVID-19. Misinformation about coronavirus can create fear and hostility that hurts people and makes it harder to keep everyone healthy. We’re stronger as a community when we stand together against discrimination.

Additionally, Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee announced a new emergency proclamation for King, Snohomish and Pierce counties to restrict gatherings for more than 250 people. The requirements can be viewed on the Governor’s Office website. The Snohomish County Health District also issued a local health order with guidance about events.

Please know that I take the governor’s directives and concern very seriously. As such, all college-sponsored travel is suspended effective March 16 to April 30, 2020. We will monitor and reassess if needed. If there is essential travel that should occur, contact Vice President Denise Gregory-Wyatt. Final approval will come from me.

We are also working hard on plans for Spring quarter. More information about Spring will be coming soon

We will continue to provide updates to guide students, faculty, and staff, while working to ensure the health and safety of our community, at EverettCC.edu/Coronavirus.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
President, Everett Community College

Posted: March 10, 2020, 5:20 p.m.

Good evening,

I wanted to draw your attention to some helpful information being shared by the Washington State Department of Health about COVID-19 (novel coronavirus).

The college continues to closely monitor guidance from the Snohomish Health District, Washington State Department of Health, and Centers for Disease Prevention and Control.

According to the Washington State Department of Health, here’s what to do if:

You have a cough and a fever:

  • If you have had a test and actually been diagnosed with COVID-19, you need to stay home away from people for 7 days or until 72 hours after your fever and symptoms are gone, whichever is longer.
  • If you have NOT had a COVID-19 test, but you have had close contact with someone who has had a test and been diagnosed with COVID-19, you should isolate yourself at home for 7 days OR until 72 hours after your fever is gone and your symptoms get better, whichever is longer.
  • If you have NOT been around anyone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19, you should stay home away from others until 72 hours after the fever is gone and symptoms get better. You may have COVID-19 or you may have any number of other respiratory diseases circulating in our communities.

You feel fine:

  • BUT you have had close contact with a sick person who has been diagnosed with COVID-19. Please monitor your health for fever, cough and shortness of breath during the 14 days after the last day you were in close contact with the sick person with COVID-19. You should not go to work or school, and should avoid public places for 14 days.
  • BUT your kid or someone else in your household has a cough and a fever, but has NOT been tested for COVID-19. The sick person needs to stay home until their fever and symptoms have been gone for 72 hours. You and the rest of the household can continue to go to work and school as long as you feel well. There are many potential respiratory diseases that can cause cough and a fever.
  • BUT a friend of a friend of yours has COVID-19. You can continue to go to work and school as long as you feel well.
  • BUT you are worried about your older or medically fragile friends and relatives. This is a time to practice social distancing. Refrain from shaking hands, high fives, and hugs, stand 6 feet or more away from other people. See if you can work from home. Wash your hands frequently.

EvCC also continues to track reports of individuals in our college community who may have been exposed to COVID-19. At this time, no additional positive cases have been reported other than the student who tested positive on Feb. 27.

Please continue to share factual information about the coronavirus, not stigmatize individuals and families from particular groups, and to speak out against bias and harassment.

Thank you very much for working with us during this unprecedented time.

Sincerely,

Dr. Daria Willis

Good evening,

I was excited to see Everett Community College reopen today after a three-day closure for cleaning.

All EvCC offices are open, including (but not limited to):

Please see the webpages listed above for office hours and contact information. Students who do not wish to come to campus for services and who prefer an online method of service may contact individual departments for options. A complete list of Student Services offices is listed on this webpage.

EvCC academic division offices are also open:

The college is supporting the Snohomish Health District’s efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19 and reduce the number of people infected in our region by moving most EvCC courses online. Other classes are continuing in person.

The college has gone through a lot of change in the past week. Those changes are challenging for students, faculty, and staff. What has not changed since the college opened in 1941 is our commitment to student success. Online or in person, we are here to help you succeed.

Also, I want to remind you to share factual information about the coronavirus, not to stigmatize individuals and families from particular groups, and to speak out against bias and harassment.

I am confident that by working together and supporting each other, we will make it through this challenging time.

Sincerely,

Dr. Daria Willis

Dear Students,

Everett Community College has been addressing the unprecedented challenges and rapidly changing circumstances in the past few weeks with the spread of COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) in our region.

We have endeavored to operate in a manner that prioritizes the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff while allowing our students full opportunity to continue to engage in their academic studies.

Snohomish Health District is urging the public and employers in the region to support their efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19 and reduce the number of people infected in the region. To support these efforts, most EvCC courses will be offered online starting Monday. Other classes will continue in person (keep reading for details).

This is a long message, and we need you to please read it all the way through.

If you have a question about this information - and we know there will be questions - please email your instructor directly or message via Canvas. That is the fastest way for you to get an answer.

What You Need To Know To Finish Winter Quarter Courses

  1. Effective Monday, March 9, 2020, the college will resume course instruction by moving all courses and final exams online if it is possible to cover that content online. Select campus computer labs (Shuksan 231, Gray Wolf Hall 162 and 164, and the Library) will be open to accommodate students without online access in other locations.
  2. Some course requirements and final exams cannot be completed using an online platform. With approval from Deans and the Executive Vice President of Instruction and Student Services, instructors may continue to offer in-person labs, clinicals, studios, etc. that cannot be completed online. Any in-person instruction activities will use social distancing practices and regular disinfection processes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, social distancing includes maintaining distance (approximately 6 feet) from others.
  3. For those course requirements or final exams that cannot be completed online or completed in-person before March 20, the college will provide a makeup opportunity. This may occur during the week of March 23-27, and no later than April 10.

Instructors will communicate their specific course plans with students using all available means, including Canvas and student email.

The following sites and programs will remain open as indicated below:

  • Aviation - in-person classes and campus open (talk to your instructor about specific FAA requirements for completion)
  • Nursing clinicals - clinical sites and clinical/simulation spaces in Liberty Hall open
  • ORCA - courses moved online
  • CCEC - open for business
  • Cosmetology - campus open for instruction with no clients
  • AMTEC  - open with some courses moved online
  • East County - open with courses moved online
  • Fitness Center - open with courses moved online

Deans will work collaboratively with instructors and instructors will work collaboratively with students to ensure minimal disruption and fair and equitable assessment for all students.

Instructors will work with students who cannot come to campus to assist in the completion of courses and final exams. Options include offering make-up opportunities no later than April 10 or requesting an Incomplete using the guidelines described in the course Catalog.

Again, students should contact their instructors via email or Canvas with questions.

All EvCC departments will be open beginning March 9, 2020. All services to students will be available either in-person or online, including tutoring, the Writing Center, the Library, the Center for Disability Services, advising, and placement testing, among others. Students who do not wish to come to campus for services and who prefer an online method of service may contact the individual departments for options.

Early Learning Center

The EvCC Early Learning Center will be open regular hours; no student observations will occur to increase social distancing.

Food Service

The cafe will be closed next week; Bargreens will be open. The college is investigating other possible on-campus food options. The food pantry will be accessible during normal hours with assistance from Student LIFE.

Register Now for Spring Quarter! First Day of Classes is April 6!

Students will not have advising-related blocks for Spring Quarter registration.

Tuition Payment and Financial Aid

Spring Quarter tuition due dates have been extended to March 23, 2020, 6:30 p.m., and there will be no drops for non-payment until this date. Students who register after March 23 will be held to the standard tuition payment deadline. Tuition payments may be made online.

Required documents for 2020-21 financial aid applications will now be due by June 1, 2020

Other Important Information

EvCC is working closely with the Snohomish Health District and will continue to prioritize the safety of our students, faculty, and staff.

I also want to remind you of EvCC’s commitment to diversity and equity. EvCC will not tolerate discriminatory remarks or behavior toward any member of our college community.

Please continue to check your email and EverettCC.edu/Coronavirus.

Be kind to each other and wash your hands,

Sincerely,

Good afternoon,

We have good news to share: this afternoon we were contacted by the Snohomish Health District who told us that the EvCC student who tested positive for COVID-19 poses little to no risk to EvCC students, faculty, and staff.

The student was last on campus on Feb. 27, and did not have symptoms at that time. This virus spreads with close contact (within six feet for a prolonged period of time) and is unlikely to spread without symptoms, according to a Snohomish Health District epidemiologist.

Because there is not a risk to EvCC students, faculty, and staff, the Snohomish Health District will not be contacting any EvCC employees or students about this case.

I decided to close the college at noon on Thursday due to reports from some individuals in our EvCC community who believe they may have been exposed to COVID-19. The college acted out of an abundance of caution based on the information we had at the time.

Shortly after the college closed, we learned from the student about the positive test result from Public Health - Seattle & King County.

We are continuing to monitor the other reports of exposure, and should any of these individuals have a positive COVID-19 test result, the college will again work with the Snohomish Health District.

Here are some actions you can take to help us all stay as healthy as possible. The most important is that if you are sick, please stay home.

These are some of the steps EvCC is taking to promote the health and safety of our college community:

  • Social distancing
  • Implementing a liberal telecommuting policy for employees
  • Moving as many classes as possible online
  • Limiting college events to 50 people or fewer

We are extremely thankful for the work of our custodial staff, who are working around the clock to make sure our campus is clean and safe to reopen on Monday. I also appreciate the hard work of the deans, faculty, staff, Safety & Security, and other employees who are continuing our planning.

I also want to remind you of EvCC’s commitment to diversity and equity. EvCC will not tolerate discriminatory remarks or behavior toward any member of our college community.

We will continue to prioritize the safety of our students, faculty, and staff and will provide you with updates as we have them.

Sincerely,

Dr. Daria Willis

Good morning,

Thank you very much for your patience as we gather some additional information.

We continue to work closely with the Snohomish Health District with regard to the student who informed us yesterday of a positive COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) test.

The student last attended class on February 27. We know that there are no Running Start students registered in the student’s class.

The college has been asked by the Snohomish Health District to allow them to notify students or staff who may have been in close contact with that individual. Close contact is defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as being within approximately 6 feet of a COVID-19 case for a prolonged period of time.

The Health District has asked the college to give their disease investigators some time to do their work. Consequently, we are not providing further information at this time. Due to federal healthcare laws and student privacy laws, we are restricted from being able to share the name of the student.

Over the past week, the college has received reports from some individuals in our EvCC community who believe they may have been exposed to COVID-19. We are continuing to monitor the reports, and should any of these individuals have a positive COVID-19 test result, the college will again work with the Snohomish Health District.

Plans in progress

We continue to work on our plan for finishing winter quarter and the logistics associated with re-opening offices and classes on Monday.  We plan to have most courses offered online and other classes will continue in person (some lab sections, Cosmetology and Aviation Maintenance, for example).

Social distancing measures like these are recommended by the Snohomish Health District, Snohomish County, and the City of Everett.

Our custodial staff has also been hard at work to do a thorough cleaning of our entire campus.

These details take time to finalize, so stay tuned for more updates!

Sincerely,

Dr. Daria Willis
Everett Community College President

Good evening,
Everett Community College has received many questions and requests for additional information from students, faculty, and staff about the student who informed us this afternoon of a positive COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) test.

I understand why you are concerned, but I need to ask for your patience, please.

We are working closely with the Snohomish Health District. The Health District has asked the college to give their disease investigators some time to do their work. Consequently, we are not providing further information at this time.

We have requested information and guidance from the Snohomish Health District epidemiology team. They have a lot going on right now, so please be patient. We will update as soon as we can.

Shortly after we announced our college’s closure, we were notified by an EvCC student that the student has tested positive for COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) through Public Health - Seattle & King County.

EvCC is already closed for deep cleaning through Sunday.

EvCC is working closely with local and state public health officials and following guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Snohomish Health District.

Due to federal healthcare laws and student privacy laws, we are restricted from being able to share the name of the student.

As you know, this is a rapidly changing situation. We will continue to share information as we learn it.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis

Message from EvCC President Dr. Daria Willis

Out of an abundance of caution, I closed Everett Community College at noon today (March 5) for cleaning. All classes are canceled and all offices are closed. The closure will continue through Sunday.

This includes all EvCC locations and online classes.

We hope to resume regular operations on Monday. I will provide an update on Sunday about the status of operations for Monday.

At this time, no members of the EvCC community have been diagnosed with COVID-19. We have received reports of students and employees who were exposed to COVID-19, but we are not aware of any student or employee who has tested positive.

I made this decision today in conjunction with the President’s Policy Group after the update provided today by Snohomish County and Snohomish Health District to take proactive steps to protect the health of our entire community.

As the Health District noted, the goal is to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our area and reduce the number of people infected. This is a critical moment in the growing outbreak of COVID-19 in Snohomish County when such measures can potentially impact the spread of the disease.

We are also canceling EvCC's International Women’s Day event, Womxn in Leadership Conference, and other major EvCC events through Sunday. For the Northwest Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament scheduled for today through March 8, participation is limited to athletes, coaches, tournament officials, and other NWAC-designated officials.

Information is changing rapidly. Please also check the Snohomish District website often.

We are also working to update EvCC’s FAQs on this page

Also, I want to remind you of EvCC’s commitment to diversity and equity. Diseases can make anyone sick, regardless of their race or ethnicity. Misinformation about coronavirus and discrimination can create fear and hostility that hurts people and makes it harder to keep everyone healthy. We’re stronger as a community when we stand together against discrimination.

The most important thing you can do is remain calm, prepared, and informed. And wash your hands!

Sincerely,
Daria J. Wills
President, Everett Community College

Message from EvCC President Dr. Daria Willis

Update on EvCC's preparations related to COVID-19 (novel coronavirus)

As you may have heard, Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency on Saturday after the first death in the United States attributed to the novel coronavirus occurred in King County.

Gov. Inslee directed state agencies to use “all resources necessary” to prepare for and respond to the coronavirus outbreak, a directive we are following at Everett Community College.

I write today to ensure you are aware of how EvCC is working with public health officials to be as prepared as possible to protect the health of the EvCC community. Currently, no members of the EvCC community have been diagnosed with COVID-19.

EvCC continues to maintain normal operations at this time. But we are preparing so that we will be ready to take fast action if needed. Everyone’s health and safety is our highest priority.

On Monday morning, EvCC’s Emergency Management Team will meet to continue our planning. EvCC is working closely with local and state public health officials and following guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to align our plans with the most current recommendations from experts. This includes encouraging everyone to monitor their own health, practice good hygiene and stay home if feeling sick.

Get informed, stay healthy

Many students, faculty, and staff are asking what they can do. Here are some actions you can take to help us all stay as healthy as possible.

Get informed

Information is changing rapidly. Refer to and share this webpage, which includes Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for students, faculty, and staff. Please check back frequently for updates.

Practice good hygiene

  • Stay home from work and school when you feel sick.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and immediately dispose of the tissue.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds, and if soap and water are not available use a 60-95% alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces that are frequently touched.

Reduce the spread of germs

EvCC custodial staff are spending extra time cleaning our buildings, making cleaning touchpoints a high priority. We are also ordering additional supplies for buildings for students, faculty, and staff to use as needed, and we expect those supplies to arrive this week.

We will continue to provide you with updates as we have them, including on this webpage.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
Everett Community College President

Message from EvCC President Dr. Daria Willis

As many of you have heard, a student at Jackson High School in Mill Creek has tested presumptive positive for Coronavirus, or COVID-19.

Everett Community College has been in ongoing communication with the Everett School District and the Snohomish Health District as part of our planning.

I have been in contact with Everett School District Superintendent Ian Saltzman this morning, and he confirmed that the student was NOT an EvCC Running Start student. We have no reason to believe at this time that the student has been on any of EvCC’s campuses.

I have activated EvCC’s Emergency Management Team to identify resources and strategies to prepare EvCC to prevent the spread of the virus and rapidly respond to any concerns that arise. Members of that team are working on that plan now.

This is a rapidly evolving situation, and EvCC will provide updated information and guidance as it becomes available. It is important not to panic, but be educated and prepared.

I encourage you to visit the CDC webpage, Snohomish Health District webpage, or the Washington State Department of Health webpage for the latest information.

The Washington State Department of Health has also set up a call center to answer questions about the novel coronavirus. If you have questions about what is happening in Washington state, how the virus is spread and what to do if you have symptoms, please call 1-800-525-0127 and press #.

Also, as we work together to respond, I want to remind you of EvCC’s commitment to diversity and equity. Diseases can make anyone sick, regardless of their race or ethnicity. Help stop fear by letting people know that being of Asian descent - or any other group - does not increase the chance of getting or spreading the virus.

There are steps we can take now to prevent the spread of all viruses, including the flu. Keep reading for tips from the Snohomish Health District.

There are simple things you can do to help keep yourself and others healthy

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

EvCC’s Facilities staff is also spending extra time cleaning our buildings, making cleaning touchpoints a high priority.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daria J. Willis
Everett Community College President

Information on COVID-19

EvCC's leadership team, Campus Safety, Security & Emergency Management Office, and College Advancement are closely monitoring information about the respiratory illness caused by a novel coronavirus, now called COVID-19, in coordination with state and local health departments.

This is an evolving situation, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will provide updated information as it becomes available.

This page is intended to provide information about COVID-19, precautions that are being taken and prevention measures you can take. It is not intended to be all-encompassing and should not be considered to be providing medical or legal advice. In all instances, you should consult with a relevant expert for guidance specific to your circumstances.
