Initiative 2 Start to Finish

 "Start to Finish" Advising

Currently, all degree-seeking students are required to complete mandatory advising with a faculty advisor prior to third quarter to develop a degree plan.  In the "Start to Finish" advising model, new degree-seeking students will also be required to meet with an entry advisor to: select first quarter classes; verify program intent code; refer students to faculty advisor to develop an individual degree plan OR to counselors (if undecided on major) OR to basic skills division (if ABE/ESL/Dev Ed); and enroll in the college success course.  This step will enhance the current advising model by providing more structured guidance to new students in their first quarter and connecting them to their program faculty advisor sooner.  And, for undecided students, this will provide for a more structured process of moving to declared and prepared.  Students will continue to be expected to meet with a faculty advisor once to develop a degree plan.

The steps in "Start to Finish" are (pilot Fall Quarter 2012 for Winter Quarter 2013 registration):

  1. Upon completion of Mandatory Online Orientation AND placement testing, new students will be directed to the Educational Planning Center for entry advising.
  2. Faculty advisors will advise new degree seeking students prior to first quarter registration to: verify program intent code, interpret placement test scores, and select first quarter classes.
  3. Faculty advisors will refer all degree seeking students to the following options (as appropriate):
    • Enroll in College Success course;
    • Refer student to a program faculty advisor if major is decided;
    • Refer student to an "undecided" workshop, career life planning classes or faculty counselor if major undecided;
    • Refer student to basic skills division of ABE/ESL/Dev Ed.
  4. All students will be required to have a degree plan prior to their third quarter registration.

Note: Additional Financial Aid outreach will be included in each step
