EVERETT, Wash. – Everett Community College will launch its first bachelor of applied science degree this fall in accounting.

The program is designed for working adults and others who may not be able to earn a traditional accounting degree due to work or family obligations or costs. Classes start in September 2023, with evening and online options taught by EvCC accounting faculty.

“We are excited to offer our first bachelor’s degree, which will lead to family-sustaining careers for our students,” Interim President Darrell L. Cain said.

A bachelor of applied science (BAS) degree is a bachelor’s degree that has more career-focused skill development and less theoretical education than a traditional bachelor’s degree. Tuition will cost less than most four-year universities.

“The BAS builds on an associate degree and equips students with the specific, career-focused knowledge they need to excel in their chosen field,” Vice President of Instruction Cathy Leaker said.

An advisory committee made up of certified public accountants (CPAs), business owners and operators, and four-year university partners advised the development of the degree. Many of those employers will serve as practicum sites where students can hone their skills.

“There is increasing demand locally for accountants with four-year-degrees and advanced skills, and EvCC is well positioned to deliver this degree,” said Ron Tilden, a retired CPA and University of Washington-Bothell accounting professor, who served on the EvCC advisory committee. “Graduates of this program should experience meaningful and well-paying opportunities in the workforce.”

Natalie Elder hopes to become one of the first BAS accounting students after graduating with her associate degree from EvCC in 2021.

“EvCC’s accounting professors are so exceptional that I couldn’t see myself going anywhere else,” said Elder, who plans to become a CPA and run her own accounting firm.

The application for the BAS in accounting program will open soon. Interested students can sign up for notifications at EverettCC.edu/AccountingBAS. Email accountingBAS@everettcc.edu or call 425-388-9243 with questions.
