Optional Practical Training (OPT) Information

Overview

Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows F1 post-secondary students to participate in practical training employment in their field of study. Students must have studied full time in F1 status for at least one academic year. To apply, students work with the International Education Center to file their application through the USCIS website. No employment can begin until students have received the proper documentation from USCIS. OPT is an excellent option for students after graduation.

Steps to Apply for OPT

1. Register and attend an OPT workshop the quarter before or of your graduation.

2. Apply for graduation and receive graduation confirmation letter form Enrollment Services.

3. Prepare electronic copies of the supporting documentation below, make a USCIS account, and create a draft I-765 online.

  • Copy of the photo page of your passport
  • Copy of the visa page of your passport
  • Copy of your I-94
  • Copy of all previous Employment Authorization Documents
  • Copy of all previous I-20s with CPT or OPT authorization

4. Set up an OPT Application appointment. Meet with the Melissa, the SEVIS Specialist. Be sure to bring your laptop, your draft application, and all your electronic documents prepared for review. If your application is complete, submit your application.

If your application is incomplete, the USCIS may deny your application without refunding the fee. It is your responsibility to make sure all information is complete and accurate.
