New Training in Cyber Security for Physical Infrastructure

Everett Community College is the first community college in the nation to provide training for students who are learning how to protect physical infrastructure from cyber attacks using real industrial components and networks.

Students learn to protect the information technology that runs crucial public and private systems like the electrical grid, water treatment systems, manufacturing, and even traffic systems. You’ll work with interactive technology and devices, learning how to control the system, defend it from attack, and even find vulnerabilities and hack it yourself.

The heart of this system is an interactive 15-foot wall that replicates a small manufacturing facility.

About the Program

Part of the college’s Information Technology program, the Industrial Cybersecurity program offers academic classes that lead to in-demand jobs, cyber security competitions, workshops, and opportunities for industry professionals to train and engage with students. Collectively, this is known as SPEAR, EvCC’s Student Performance Engagement and Assessment Range.

Here’s a look at some of the industrial devices students will use:

Classes

Students will use this technology in four classes at EvCC: Assessing and Securing Control Systems (IT 175), Information Security Fundamentals (IT 180), Network Defense (IT 245), and Ethical Hacking and Countermeasures (IT 280).

There are growing opportunities for students in Information Technology, Advanced Manufacturing and Business to collaborate and learn with this new technology. Current students, talk to your program advisor to learn more.

Cyber Challenges

EvCC is planning cyber challenges for college students and high school students. Students will compete in a series of technical tasks.

Spoiler alert: Here’s a sneak peak at the competition themes.

Partners

GRIMM, a national leader in cyber-to-physical security research, developed EvCC’s 15-foot industrial cybersecurity training wall, advanced trainers and both security competitions.

EvCC is looking for industry professionals to provide internships and to serve as student mentors and advisory board members for this program. To learn more, email IT_academic@everettcc.edu
