Grant funds new program to close gender gap in aviation training

EVERETT, Wash. – Everett Community College is receiving a $412,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to lead a coalition of educators in work to increase the number of women entering the aerospace technician workforce.

EvCC is partnering with Everett Public Schools, Marysville School District, Mukilteo School District and several industry partners to launch Building Equity for Aerospace Training.

This grant brings together educators who share the goal of closing the gender gap in aviation and increasing opportunities for women in aviation technician careers,” said Rob Prosch, EvCC Interim Dean of Aerospace and Advanced Manufacturing Careers. The majority of the grant funding will support professional development for middle and high school teachers, community college faculty and career counselors considered to be part of the STEM-to-aerospace career pathway.

EvCC’s Aviation Maintenance Technician School celebrates 50th anniversary with a reception Oct. 11

Everett Community College’s Aviation Maintenance Technician School is celebrating its 50th anniversary year with a public reception 4 to 6 p.m. at the school, 9711 32nd Place W. Building C-80 at Paine Field in Everett. To attend, RSVP at EverettCC.edu/Aviation. EvCC’s Aviation Maintenance Technician School started in 1967 in a converted military commissary at Paine Field. The school received its Federal Aviation Administration license in 1968, and moved to its current home near the Paine Field main terminal in 1985. The program has trained hundreds of skilled aviation maintenance technicians working in the industry statewide. The school has also benefited from industry and individual donations of equipment and aircraft for students to use in training.

Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee joined Everett Community College in celebrating the $2.5 million expansion of EvCC’s Advanced Manufacturing Training & Education Center (AMTEC) Oct. 25 at the center, 909 N. Broadway. “This really is an astounding achievement to see the progress in just two years,” said Inslee, who previously visited the building before it opened in 2014 and for AMTEC’s grand opening later that year. “This is one of the more innovative efforts in job skill development in the nation.”

Everett Community College is celebrating National Manufacturing Day today by announcing a $2.5 million expansion of the college’s Advanced Manufacturing Training & Education Center (AMTEC). The expansion will add 17,000 square feet to AMTEC, which is home to the college’s precision machining, welding and fabrication, engineering technician, composites and pre-employment programs. The new space includes eight classrooms and a lab for EvCC’s new mechatronics technician program. Construction will start in April 2016.

EVERETT, Wash. – Everett Community College is the first community college in the nation to join five universities in a Boeing-led collaboration to close the skills gap in aerospace engineering.

EvCC is the newest partner in AerosPACE (Aerospace Partners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering) along with Purdue, Georgia Institute of Technology, Tuskegee, BrighamYoung and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Universities. Boeing created the program in 2013 to help the next generation of aerospace employees learn through real-life collaboration on a project.

Everett Community College and the Center of Excellence for Aerospace & Advanced Manufacturing at EvCC will receive more than $1.5 million in new state funding to train students for aerospace jobs. The Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges awarded $1,577,703 to EvCC to pay for faculty, curriculum design, equipment and staffing to support aerospace programs as part of a statewide effort to increase training opportunities for aerospace jobs. “This investment will help Washington state continue to provide employers with the best-trained aerospace workforce in the world,” EvCC President David Beyer said. “We are thankful for Gov. Inslee and the Legislature’s support for aerospace education and training.”
