Community members, students, and employees gathered to learn about the progress Everett Community College has made and actions it has taken in implementing the Strategic Plan based on suggestions and ideas gathered at previous community engagement events over the last six years. Participants visited report out stations to hear presentations on each of the five Strategic Priorities:
- Student Success
- Innovation and Leadership
- Community Connections and Partnerships
- Cultural Pluralism and Global Readiness
- Resource Stewardship
Spotlight on North Snohomish County: Education for Economic Vitality

Location: Weston High School, Arlington (Smokey Point area)
Participants explored thoughts and ideas about how Everett Community College could best serve the richly diverse North Snohomish County students and employers as our communities continue to grow and thrive. Ideas were shared regarding how community college could serve as an innovative resource to educate individuals and develop leaders who will contribute to the quality of life and build economic opportunities in their communities.
The ideas gathered at this event are valuable in assisting the college in better understanding the needs and expectations of our students and community in the North Snohomish county area and in strengthening our implementation of our Strategic Priorities of Student Success, Cultural Pluralism and Global Readiness, Community Connections and Partnerships, and Innovation and Leadership.
Engaging Family and Community to Support Student Achievement and Success

Community members for Everett Community College’s interactive community engagement event Engaging Family and Community to Support Student Achievement and Success met to explore a whole-person approach to support student success in college and beyond.
The ideas gathered at this event are valuable in assisting the college to better understand just how our community and college families can best help our students succeed. The transition to college and career is often a significant challenge for students, and we wanted to determine the best ways possible to support their success in college and in their chosen life path. Ideas, creativity and thoughtfulness came together to help determine what strong family and community support systems are for our students and how we can incorporate them into the college experience. We thought creatively about how to ensure that all students, including those who are underrepresented, their families, and the community can have a voice in the educational experience, helping the College in strengthening our implementation of our Strategic Priorities of Student Success, Cultural Pluralism and Global Readiness, Community Connections and Partnerships, and Innovation and Leadership.

Innovation and Leadership in Education: Changing Individual Lives and Growing Dynamic Communities

Community members at the event, Innovation and Leadership in Education: Changing Individual Lives and Growing Dynamic Communities, explored thoughts and ideas about education as a source of leadership and innovation, the significance of the impact it has on individual lives and on the building and shaping of our community. The ideas gathered at this event are valuable in assisting the college in implementing our Strategic Priority of Innovation and Leadership and helping us better understand the needs and expectations of our community, students, and employees.
Valuing Difference: Inclusion and Equity in Education

Community members met at Everett Community College for a very important interactive community conversation, Valuing Difference: Inclusion and Equity in Education. In partnership with Everett Public Schools and Marysville School District, we explored the opportunities for improving student success for all by including marginalized populations at every level, valuing each person's unique experience and contributions, and preparing all students to engage as citizens in a world without boundaries. The input received at this event is valuable in assisting the college in implementing our Strategic Priority of Cultural Pluralism and Global Readiness. This Strategic Priority was developed with the input of the community at two previous events, one held in February of 2012 about Serving Diverse Student and Community Populations, as well as the two-day Visioning Event in April 2012.
How Higher Education Can Drive Economic Development

Everett Community College invited the public to participate in a discussion about how higher education can serve as a catalyst to drive economic vitality in Snohomish County. The keynote speaker was Walla Walla Community College President Steve VanAusdle, who spoke about higher education's role in improving the economic climate and his experience helping drive economic growth and vitality in Walla Walla’s wine and water management industries. A panel of business leaders offered local context to his comments by discussing the importance of education-business partnerships and the future outlook for growth in Snohomish County. Participants were asked to identify and discuss what Snohomish County's community colleges and four-year partners can do to help drive economic vitality here.
Improving Educational Pathways - a next step in implementing EvCC's new strategic plan

The next step in the planning process was an event called Improving Educational Pathways. Together we explored how best to support student transitions between high school, college, and career. We sought out thoughts and perspective from community members on the challenges students encounter along their educational pathways and ideas on how to move toward a more seamless alignment of educational systems. A student panel discussed keys to success and advice for future students to help navigate to their goals. Also, participants were asked to provide input into what would be successful ways to create and support seamless educational pathways for students.
Visioning Event

During this important two-day meeting, representatives of the entire EvCC community, both inside the College and external to it, worked together to help create a joint vision for the future of the College. This vision, along with the input from the community engagement events, guided the EvCC Strategic Plan. Information was shared from the four community engagement events, the environmental scanning task force, and our planning council comprised of internal and external stakeholders. Community members and college employees created EvCC's vision for the next 3-5 years.
Event #4: Enhancing Community Partnerships and Relationships

Few organizations can reach their full potential operating independently of their community. Partnerships enhance outcomes for all involved. How could community colleges and their constituents build stronger relationships to support their missions and desired outcomes? How do EvCC, the local community, and employers work together more effectively to address our mutual needs? Community members were invited to share their ideas about developing and supporting community partnerships for education.
Event #3: Defining Student Success in Community Colleges

Time: 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m
Traditional definitions of student success were developed with four-year educational institutions in mind, and do not necessarily reflect the mission and purpose of community colleges in today’s environment. What could student success look like in community colleges, particularly EvCC, in the future? Community members were invited to share their ideas and perspectives on the changing definition of student success and its implications for education and employment.
Event #2: Serving a Diverse Student and Community Population

The world has become smaller through globalization and our local environment has become more diverse. How will we continue to understand and support increasing underrepresented populations at Everett Community College? What can our college and community do together to better engage and support a diverse student and community population? Community members were invited to share their thoughts and ideas about supporting underrepresented populations in higher education.

Community colleges today are faced with major change in their local and global environments and must make proactive strategic choices about the roles they will take on and the needs they will serve. Community members were invited to share their thoughts and ideas about these choices and their implications for Everett Community College through a structured process for discussion and feedback.
